Not from work though...
仕事のせいでは無く…

Organizing a hanami party for my colleagues!
I knew it was going to be cold...
And it indeed was cold...
職場の花見の幹事！
寒くなることは分かっていた点
そしてその通り寒かった…

it wasn't that bad in the afternoon...
rather warm... at least, compared to yesterday...
cold winds just made it worse at night...

But I was surprised more than twenty members of my office came out to the party and I had to ask my fellow organizers to get more food and drinks.
Many working at Kasumigaseki probably had farewell parites and I was prepared for the worst... that only about ten would come and join in this freezing weather. I was wrong!
でも驚いたことに２０人以上の同僚が花見に来てくれて、相幹事たちにもっと食べ物や飲み物を買いに行ってもらわなきゃ行けなくなった。
霞ヶ関の連中は送別会があっただろうし、最悪のことを考えていた…こんな凍える天気の中、１０人ぐらいしか来ないって。間違ってた！

Now I just hope everybody didn't catch a cold...
They have other beautiful sakuras waiting for them this weekend!!
とにかく今はみんなが風邪をひいてないことを祈るだけ…
今週末、他の美しい桜が彼らを待ってるはずだから！！

After last night's rain, the weather of winter with strong cold winds are back.
Rushing to my office by five, I spent the whole morning being baffled up a little, as there was nothing to do...
But luckily, time flew by instantly, and I went home in the afternoon to get some sleep...
昨夜の雨の後、強く冷たい風が吹く冬の天気が戻ってきた。
５時までに職場に急行したが、午前中は何にもやることなかったんで、少しまごついていた…。
でも幸いに、時間は一瞬で過ぎ去り、午後にちょっと寝るために帰った…。

Talking about those old days, and realizing how long I've been away from the nice countryside. I understand how great a place Tokyo is, but I miss a whole lot... the smell of the flowers, the scenary of mountains, delicious fish and meat for a reasonable price, and of course the people...
昔のことを話して、心地よい田舎からどれぐらい長く離れているか実感した。東京がどんなにすげーところかは理解してるが、色んなものが懐かしいね…。花の香り、山の景色、リーズナブルなプライスで食える美味しい魚や肉、そして勿論、住人たち…。

Maybe it would be my dream that the city can be such a place too...
Impossible...
都会もそんなところになったらいいなっていうのが俺の夢かもね…
不可能だな…。

A new start!

The farewell party continued till six in the morning!!
I really had hoped it was Saturday or something...
But... attending a party to say thanks to our staff heading to a new start... especially by staying till the end, is how I show how high I have regards to them working with us.
Hope they'll have a great new start next month!
送別会は朝の６時まで続いた！！
きょうは土曜か何かやったらとマジで祈ったわ…。
でも…新たな旅立ちに出るスタッフに御礼を言う会に参加すること…特に最後まで付き合うっちゅうことは、一緒に働いてきた彼らにどれぐらい敬意を表しているか示すことなんや。
来月からの新たな旅立ちが素晴らしいものになることを祈ってますわ！

In the morning, there was a breaking news about the Kanazawa district court giving out a decision ordering a ban of the operation of the Shika nuclear power station in Ishikawa Prefecture, saying an earthquake fault existing near the station (the Ouchigata Fault) could cause a breakage in the station.
My colleagues who were there at the party had to stay awake throughout the day to cover this unprecedented news. A really tough day for them!!
But me... I was just spending a "half-dead" day, calling around labs of researchers to find new ideas and occasionally taking a nap at the sofa at break time.
朝になって大ニュースが入ってきた。金沢地裁が石川県の志賀原発の運転を差し止めるよう命じる判決を下した。原発の近くにある地震断層（邑知潟断層）が破損の原因になりうるという判断を下して。
飲み会にいた同僚たちは一日中起きてこの前代未聞のニュースを取材しないといけなかった。彼らにとってはきっつい一日やなぁ！！
でもオレにとって…オレは「半死」の日を過ごしただけ。新しいネタを探すために学者の研究室を電話し回って、時々休み時間にソファで仮眠を取って。

And in the evening, I went out to Ginza to attend a farewell party of government officials I frequently visit for covering stories about disaster prevention.
I hope they too will have a nice new start next month!
そして夕方になって、防災の取材でよく顔を出している役所の人たちの送別会に参加するために銀座に出掛けた。
彼らにとっても新しい旅立ちが良いものとなりますように！

Cheers came out of no where in the evening and I found out it was because of a bout between two Mongolians: between the grand champion and a hopeful.
夕方にどこからともなく歓声があがり、後からそれがモンゴル人対決が原因だったことを知った：横綱と将来性ありの対決。

I e-mailed my acquaintance whose really into watching Sumo Wrestling, and according to him, Hakuho who beat Asashoryu, would someday become a Yokozuna.
Soon it will become the Mongolian "Ryu-ho" era and we will have to wait a while till a Japanese sumo wrestler will take over, who could be Kisenosato who won his eighth today. Hakuho could win this tournament remaining undefeated after today's bout, and will get the chance to climb the last of the stairs up to the top!
相撲にはまっている知り合いにメールをしたら、彼によると、朝青龍を破った白鵬はいつかは横綱になるらしい。
まもなくモンゴルの「龍鵬」時代となり、しばらく日本人力士が支配をするのには時間がかかるとのこと。きょう８勝目を挙げた稀勢の里辺りかなと。白鵬は今日の一番のあと無敗で優勝できるかも知れない。そして一番上までの最後の会談を上るチャンスを手にするだろうね！

After waiting for about ten minutes, we walked towards Nishi Funabashi Station, and only after walking about 200 meters, we found a taxi that just dropped off a customer!! VERY LUCKY!!
１０分ほど待った後、西船橋の方に歩いて行ったら、たったの２００メートル歩いたところで、丁度客を降ろしたタクシーを見つけた！！すっげーラッキー！！

And I finally made it home...
そしてようやく家に戻って…

luckily I could fast forward the 45 minute suspension of the game by the heavy rain...

もし自分が韓国人だったら、騙されたと思うよ。だって韓国への２回分を含めて３回も負けたチームが最後の試合に行けるんだから。最後の１つしか負けてないチームは行けなくて…。

Tonight at Nikotama, I had drinks with a longtime friend, who is challenging himself by transferring to another company this spring.
Yes, I feel some envy, as I myself have thought about changing my occupation this year, looking for a new world of opportunities. It's so simple to start a new life with so much chances and with a strong belief in myself, but there's always something that I dearly think about. HUMAN RELATIONS.
There's so many people I respect in the world I work in right now, and what may move my heart to go for a tranfer is such values, and in a new world, that is just a mystery. You just can't express numerically: REVERENCE. But to look for an answer, I think we all try to limit such ambiguity and that's where second thoughts come into mind when I face the ambition to take a chance.
But I think one thing is certain... all the thinking I'm doing right now will ultimately support my career!!
今夜は二子玉で、この春に別の会社に転職して自分に挑戦しようとしている長年のダチと飲んだ。
まぁ、ちょっと羨ましいかな。自分もこの一年は、チャンスある新しい世界を求めて、転職することを考えただけにね。数え切れないチャンスがある新しい人生を始めるのはすごく簡単だ。自分を強く信じることができれば。でもいつも大切に思っていることもある。人間関係だ。
今働く世界で尊敬する人はたくさんいる。そして異動するにしても、自分の心を動かすのはそういう価値観だ。そして新しい世界では、それはただどうなるか分からないものだ。数値化できないよね：尊敬って。でも答えを探すために、そういう曖昧さはとにかくなるべく少なくしようとする。そこで好機をつかもうとする野望の前に再考が促されることになる。

タイトル：三度目は幸運が！？

I could hardly believe my ears when I heard that the Americans blew their game against Mexico. Twice, I couldn't believe that their was another questionable call by the same ump that screwed the Japan-U.S.A. game.
アメリカがメキシコとの試合を落としたと聞いて耳を疑った。日米戦を台無しにした同じ審判がまた疑惑の判定をしたと聞いてもう１度、びっくりした。

Third time to face the Koreans. Will this be a "third time lucky" situation where we say in Japanese, "It will be truthful in the third time". But... there's another saying: "What happens twice, will happen thrice". Hmm...
韓国との対戦は３度目。今度は「三度目の幸運」が来るような状況になるだろうか。日本で言うところの「三度目の正直」になるのか。でも…もう一つ「二度あることは三度ある」と言い方もできる。ふむむ…。

Anyways, as Ichiro says, the Japanese can not lose to the same team the third time, but on the other hand, will the Koreans forgive us if we win this time and head for the championship match with a 1-2 record against them!?
I don't think so... but who can stop the desire to become victorious!!
とにかく、イチローが言うように、日本は三度も同じチームに負けられない。でも、一方で、韓国はこれで勝って一勝二敗の成績で決勝戦に向かっても許してくれるかな！？
いやダメだと思う…でも勝利への欲求を誰が抑えられるだろうか！！

Today I went to FCCJ of Yurakucho, as there was a press luncheon with a panel discussion about the Mohammed cartoon conflicts. Both the opinions of the Danish ambassador and the leader of a Muslim group were understandable. They were both seriously debated, hinting on the grandiose theme of religious superiority and freedom of human rights, especially of expression and of the press.
きょうは有楽町の日本外国特派員協会に行った。ムハンマドの漫画問題についてのパネルディスカッションが行われる記者昼食会があったからだ。デンマーク大使とイスラム教徒のグループの双方の意見は理解ができた。両方ともとにかく真剣な議論だった。背景にある壮大なテーマに意見を述べているものだ。宗教の超越や人権の自由、特に表現と出版の。

In Japan, many people visit Shinto shrines on New Year's day hoping for good luck, and swear to the God their eternal love at Christian churches and join hands in front of black altars praying for the dead in Buddhist temples... We don't celebrate Yom Kippur or Eid al-Adha, but we love Christmas...
Born in a Christian family, I'm not used to going to Shinto shrines, but as many members of my ancestors are cremated under Buddism, Buddhist temples and cemeteries are not strange places to visit.
It may be hard for the Japanese to understand the superiority of religion, and that may be why not many are so interested in the cartoon conflicts. With the same reason, maybe that's why the Middle East is a very unusual area for us. But, just unusual, not unlikable.
日本ではたくさんの人が神道の神社を元日に参拝して幸運を祈って、キリスト教の教会で永遠の愛を神に誓って、仏教の寺にある黒い仏壇の前で亡くなった人のために手を合わせて冥福を祈る…。贖罪の日やイードは祝してないが、クリスマスは大好きだ…。
クリスチャン家庭に生まれて、神社に行くことには慣れていないが、先祖の多くが仏教のもとで荼毘に付されているだけに、仏教のお寺やお墓を訪問することは珍しいことではない。
日本人にとって宗教の超越は理解しにくいことかも知れない。だからあまり多くの人が風刺画問題に興味を示してないのかも知れない。同じ理由で中東がとっても普通でない地域なのかも知れない。でも、普通でないだけで、好きになれないということではない。

So what can we do!? Simple. We just have to become more aware of others' values and keep what you need, give up what you can, by not becoming too rude nor too humble.
