After watching the Short Track Speed Skating events and confirming that both the Japanese skaters could not advance to the Final A run in the 500m men's and 1000m women's, I finally went to bed at around five...
スピードスケートのショートトラック競技を見て男子５００㍍と女子１０００㍍で日本人スケーターが２人ともＡ決勝に進出できなかったことを確認したあと、ようやく５時ごろにベッドに入った…。

I couldn't wake up till noon, and I packed quickly to head eastward...

very rainy and many horses going out in front early on, were victorious, being tough to come from behind with a very wet course...
正午まで起きれず、ササッと支度をして東へ向かった…。

After spending a "loser's day" at Chiba, I went to Tameike-Sanno to attend a wedding party to congratulate my former elder collegue working together at Kobe, who is now on his road to success as a scholar after quitting our company. I was very surprised to find out my elder colleague who doesn't hide being surprised himself that he was going to marry a girl. More surprising was the fact they were having a "dekichatta kekkon" (=shotgun marriage), with a life already dwelling in the bride's body! Very surprised, I was!!
Many of my collegues together from my working days at Kobe gathered to celebrate and we went out to drink at ANA Hotel of Akasaka.
Another pleasant reunion, it was!!

千葉で「負け犬の日」を過ごしたあと、神戸で一緒に働いたあと、今はうちを辞めて、学者街道を前進している元先輩colleagueを祝う結婚パーティーに出席するために溜池山王へ。自分でも驚きを隠せないその先輩が結婚すると知ったときは、すごく驚いた。もっと驚いたのは、もう奥さんの中に生命が宿っているという「できちゃった結婚」になるということ！とっても驚いたさ、おいら！！
神戸時代の同僚たちの多くがお祝いに駆け付けたんで、赤坂の全日空ホテルに飲みに行った。
また一つ楽しい同窓会だったね！！

A pleasant reunion!

From last night, after having drinks with my doukis and a younger colleague till 4AM, I laid half dead at home just wanting to rest, rest, rest...
I used to be a sensible drinker, but now I'm more passionate than ever, as I have so many things I think and care about I'd like to share with my comrades.
Drinking with passion... makes me a little tired...
昨夜から同期と若いのと朝４時まで飲んだ後、家で仮死状態で倒れていた。とにかく休んで、休んで、休みたいと…。
昔は落ち着いて飲んでいたが、今はかなり情熱的だ。考えることや大切に思うことで、同志と共有したいことがあまりにもたくさんありすぎるから。
情熱的に飲むこと…それって少し疲れるんだけどね…。

And at night, I went out to Shinjuku drinking with long time friends.

　一期一会…。人生な多感な時期に知り合った仲間は
　本当に大切にしたいものだ。みんなまた会おうね！

Arakawa did skate cleanly but downgraded two planned triple-triple jump combinations to triple-doubles. She also doubled another solo triple later in her program. But she did not fall - which nearly all of her pursuers did - and she won over the judges with seemingly effortless spins and spirals that were clearly ahead of the field.

And she did not seem nervous, which may have been her biggest accomplishment. "She expected to win the first medal for Japan," Arakawa's interpreter said, paraphrasing her answer. "She didn't feel any pressure."

Arakawa also did not have to battle perhaps her toughest competitor, Mao Asada, who is Japan's top skater but, at 15, was a few months too young to compete in the Olympics.

JMA today announced its forecast of this summer. They predict it'll be HOT with average rainfall from June to August. It's rather challenging to say it will be a cool summer with all these talks about global warming, so who cares if they're saying it's gonna be HOT! Summers are supposed to be HOT!!

After writing my diary, I really did jump into my bed right after halftime of the Nippon-Suisse match, but my eyes were still on the TV screen, hoping for a miracle...
日記を書いた後、日本－スイス戦のハーフタイムの直後に、本当にベッドに潜り込んだんだけど、まだテレビの画面を見てしまって、奇跡が起きないかと期待してた…。

Sadly, I had to witness the Suisse team slamming in another four point end, and when the Japanese skip Onodera shook hands with the opponents, I finally closed my eyes... at around five o'clock in the morning!!
悲しいことに、スイスチームがもう１エンド４点を叩き込むのを見ざるを得なくなり、日本のスキップの小野寺が相手と握手したとき、ようやく目をつぶった…朝の５時ぐらいに！！

It was really tough to make it to the 8:40AM press conference at NPA, but I made it on time, and I didn't take a nap today till I got home after 11PM! That's how I draw the lines between public and private!!
What!? But I'm watching the Games at my office!? C'mon! I work with the media!! It's my job to be a prudent watcher of each station sensing where all the enthusiasm is at this moment!

I had no choice but to watch this dreadful ending...
放送局側の判断はラージヒル団体戦を先に見せるということだったが、日本チームのコーチが言ったとおり、日の丸隊は６位に終わった…。
このつまらん結果を見るしか選択肢は無かった…。

And right as the broadcasting switched to Curling, the Swiss team easily added a big 4 points in the fourth end, practically ending the Japanese quest to the tournament for the medals.
そして放送がカーリングに切り替わった途端、スイスチームが大きな４点を第４エンドに積んで、メダルを競うトーナメントに進む日本の冒険もほぼ終わった。

I gave up watching in the middle of the match...
Very tough decision, but I have work to do tomorrow!!
試合の途中で見るのは諦めた…。

At lunchbreak I watched the second half of the NBA All-Star Game.
The East seemed to have full control of the dream match nearing the end, but after Ben Wallace missed two freethrows, the tide seemed to have changed and it started to become a close one...
McGrady's jump shot was not even close at the West's last opportunity, followed by an offensive rebound. But Kobe lost the ball right away and the game was over with only one FG difference. Many of the plays were just beauties...except Vince Carter's missed reverse dunk in the last second of the game! :-)
昼休みにＮＢＡオールスターゲームの後半を見た。
最後の方になって東軍が完全に試合をコントロールしているように見えたが、ベン・ウォレスが２つフリースローをミスると、流れが変わって、競った試合になり始めた…。
西軍の最後のチャンスでマグレイディーのジャンプシュートは思いっきり外れて、オフェンシブ・リバウンドでつないだ。でもコービーがすぐボールを失って、１フィールドゴール差で試合は終わった。プレーの多くはとにかく美しかった…試合の最後の最後でヴィンス・カーターがミスったリバース・ダンク以外はね！ :-)
And in the evening break, almost all of the eyes of our news section staff were on the exciting match! When the last stone of the last end thrown by the Italian skip barely... JUST BARELY missed to let their stones get closer to the center, a shout of joy came out of everywhere, finding out numerous mates have fallen in love with this sport!!
The Yamatonadeshiko Curling team have won complete support in Japan now! :-)
そして夕方の休み時間には、ニュース部門のスタッフのほとんどが盛り上がった試合を見ていた！イタリアのスキップが投じた最終エンドのラスト・ストーンが辛うじて…本当に辛うじて中心にストーンを持って行くのに失敗したときに、あちこちから歓声が挙がって、このスポーツにたくさんの仲間が魅了されていたことが分かった！！
ヤマトナデシコ・カーリングチームは日本で完全に受け入れられたようだ！:-)

The women's 1000m speed skating ended up dramatically, as the Dutch skater who couldn't run at the 500m race because of the new rule against jumping the gun (the Korean skater starting together jumped first, and then at the second try, the Dutch skater jumped, disqualifying her) captured the gold medal.
She finished off her revenge in this return match at the 1000m! WOW!!

女子スピードスケート千メートルはドラマチックなエンディングだった。オランダの選手がフライングの新ルールのせいで五百メートルで走れなかった（同走の韓国の選手がまずフライングして、二回目でオランダの選手がフライングした結果、失格となった）が金メダルを獲得した。
千メートルのリターンマッチで見事にリベンジを果たした！すごいね！！

The Curling game was great, as the Skip Ayumi Onodera made several super shots to secure their second game in Turin against a much favored Canadian team. They're still standing on the edge with 3 losses, and all they must do is just WIN, WIN, and WIN!!
カーリングの試合はすごかった。スキップの小野寺歩がいくつかスーパーショットを決めて優勢と見られたカナダチームに勝って、トリノでの二勝目を確保した。三敗でいまだに崖っぷちだが、とにかく勝って、勝って、勝つしかない！！

The Japanese soccer team also played pretty well, finishing off Finland 2-0 with two great goals by Kubo and Ogasawara. Ogasawara, seeing the goalie in a bad position, kicked the ball from behind the center line, sinking in the second one!! Now we have a better vision leading to Germany!
サッカー日本代表も結構良い試合をした。久保と小笠原の二つのイケてるゴールでフィンランドを２－０で破った。ゴールキーパーが不利なポジションにいるのを見た小笠原は、センターラインの後ろからボールを蹴って、二つめを叩き込んだ！！これでドイツへ視界が開けたか！

Now, I even think that the Lewinsky scandals were better off...
I truly believe, politicians should learn and study for more than a decade to start doing something meaningful... but nowadays young politicians just try to catch attention without any experience, which means NO PERSUASIVENESS...
Unfortunately, with our election system, it can well be their only choice to do so... without any attention they won't have a chance to be reelected... A PITY...
いつも投票している民主党が巨大な自民党を攻撃した。自民党幹事長の息子へ３千万円を支払うと起訴されたホリエモンから送られた疑いがあるメールについてだ。
お互いを罵り合い…ぐぢゃぐぢゃとした戯言を言うことで、どれだけレベルが低い政治家たちがこの国を支配しているのか世界にお見せできたね。
今や、ルインスキー・スキャンダルの方がマシだったと思ってしまうぐらいだ…。
俺の信念では、政治家は何か意味があることを始めるためには、１０年以上は学んで勉強するべきだと思っている…でも最近の若い政治家は未熟なまま注目を浴びようとするばかり。それって何の説得力も無いんだよ…。
残念ながら、この国の選挙制度だと、彼らはそうするしかないのかも知れない…注目を浴びてなければ再選するのが難しいんだから…悲しいね…。

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government today, released its report saying that an estimated 4700 people could be killed with 310,000 buildings burned down completely when a M7.3 quake, the same magnitude as the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, hits the area.
The estimate is of course introduced as the worst case, but many people will surely be doomed when any kinda large earthquake hits this vulnerable metropolitan area.
東京都はきょう、阪神・淡路大震災と同じ規模のＭ７．３の地震が襲うと４７００人が死亡、３１万棟が全焼すると推定されるという報告を公表した。
この想定は勿論、最悪の場合として紹介されているが、この脆弱な首都圏にどんな大地震が起きてもたくさんの人が間違いなく不運な目に遭うだろう。
