Though a little anxious about my colleagues working like crazy in Tokyo because of the deadly typhoon...
BUT the sunny and gorgeous day lured me into forgetting the worries and wrapped me up with satisfaction again.

5 cont'd) Akan Lake ("AKANKO")

Walked around the Akan Lake area and found funny things!

6) Lake "ON'NETOH"

After checking out from the Akan Lake area, we paid a visit to a lake named "On'nentoh", meaning "the Aged Lake" in Ainu and filmed the Meakandake volcano that rose magnificently in front of the lake.

7) Abashiri City
We set ourselves northward.
Just around noon, we arrived in this beautiful city in north Hokkaido and took a tour through the museums.

Checking out "the Museum of Northern People", "Musuem of Drifting Ice of the Okhotsk", and the "Abashiri Prison Museum", it was very interesting to learn about the northern culture we rarely think of in our parts of Japan.

Yes, we do see the news about the drifting ice that arrive in the coast of northern Hokkaido in early winter, but we never can realize how freezing the winter can be.
Seeing the clothes the northern people have worn and going into a room where we can experience an 18 below zero degrees Celsius temperature, and even more. learning about the hell the prisoners in northern Japan have gone through gave me some sense of living throught the severe winters...

8) Notoro Lake ("NOTOROKO") and
9) Saroma Lake ("SAROMAKO")
We went westward throughout the evening, passing by Notoro Lake and going through an unpaved mountain road to an observatory looking down at Saroma Lake, where we are staying tonight.

The view in the evening was great and we checked in the spa hotel hoping for another beautiful day tomorrow!

恐ろしい台風のために狂ったように働いてるであろう同僚のことを少し気にしながら…
でも見事に晴れた日がそんな心配事を忘れるよう誘惑してきた。そして結局また満足感に包まれた。

５続き）阿寒湖
写真：阿寒湖周辺を歩いてたら、面白いものをたくさん見つけた！

６）「オンネトー」湖

写真：阿寒湖エリアからチェックアウトして、アイヌ語で「年老いた湖」という意味の「オンネトー」と名付けられた湖に立ち寄った。湖の前に壮大な姿でそびえ立つ雌阿寒岳火山を撮影した。

７）網走市
北方に向かった。
ちょうど正午を回る頃、北海道北部のこの美しい街にたどり着き、博物館を巡ることにした。

写真：「北方民族博物館」、「オホーツク流氷館」、「網走監獄博物館」に立ち寄ってみて、自分が住む日本の地方ではあまり思いを巡らすことのない北方文化について学ぶことができて、すごくおもしろかった。

そう、確かに初冬に北海道の北の沿岸に流氷がたどり着いたというニュースは見るけど、冬がどれだけ寒いのか実感することはまず無い。
北方民族が着ていた服を見たり、マイナス１８度を体験できる部屋に入ったり、さらに北日本で囚人が過ごしてきた地獄の日々のことを学んで、厳冬を生き抜く厳しさをちょっぴり実感することができた…。

９）サロマ湖
夕方中、西方に向かった。能取湖を通過して、舗装されていない山道を抜けて今夜泊まることになっているサロマ湖を見下ろす展望台に行った。

写真：夕方の眺望は最高だった。そして温泉ホテルにチェックインした。またあしたが素晴らしい日になることを期待しながら！

anxious　心配して、案じて、気にして
　仕事柄、台風のことはすごく気になったが、
　観光が始まると、そんなこともどこへやら…。
　そんなもんですかねぇ。
　犠牲者が増えないことを祈りながら…と
　格好つけて言いたいところだけど、
　北海道の道をぶっ放して、観光地を
　回りまくるのに精一杯でした！
　すんません…。
