Japan took the second set, but eventually gave in to the defending champions by the count of 3 sets to 1 (20-25, 27-25, 20-25, 22-25).
While I was trying to start an ambitious mission... well, just to clean up my room... I was distracted again by my TV set, this time showing a women's volleyball match with the Japanese girls fighting the champions, Brazil.
I wasn't a big fan of volleyball, but I'm very acquainted with the sport because we always played it in P.E. classes in high school and at picnics at the parks when I lived in California. It's quite popular in the U.S. as many American stars play in professional leagues of Italy and South America.
My interests have risen again when young players were fighting to reach the Olympic Games in Athens. They earned public support when they qualified for the summer in Athens and now they only need the real ability to stay popular.
Unfortunately the Brazilians crushed them tonight at the World Grand Prix tournament in Sendai (http://www.fivb.org/EN/Volleyball/Competitions/Worldgrandprix/2005/index.asp?sm=12).
Women's volleyball was once dominated by Japan as the "witches of the Orient" have captured the first ever Olympic gold medal for volleyball at the Tokyo games in 1964, and again in 1976. After boycotting the Moscow Games in 1980, though they secured a bronze medal in 1984 at LA, they have never won a medal and disappeared from the top group of contenders. They didn't even qualify to reach the Sydney games in 2000, and they're still on their way back to glory.
The young team needs experience and it seems like they are starting to put up a good fight against the champions. I'm really looking forward for the next Summer Games in Beijing, as I think they'll become good contenders by then!!

野心的な計画を実行しようとしていたとき…まぁ、部屋をきれいにしようと思っただけなんだけど…またテレビに注意をそらされた。今回は女子バレーの試合で日本女子チームがチャンピオンのブラジルと戦っていた。
バレーボールの大ファンではなかったが、競技自体にはすごく親しみがある。カリフォルニアに住んでいるときには、高校の体育の授業ではいつもやってたし、公園でするピクニックでもやってた。アメリカでは結構人気があって、たくさんのアメリカ人の人気選手がイタリアや南米のプロリーグに参加している。
興味が改めて湧いたのは若い選手たちがアテネオリンピックを目指して戦っていたときだ。アテネの切符を手に入れたときに国民的な支持も得たし、あとは人気種目であり続けるためには実力が必要なだけだ。
でも不幸にも今夜、仙台で行われているワールドグランプリ大会で、ブラジルが彼女たちを打ちのめした（英語のＨＰのＵＲＬ）
女 子バレーは日本が支配していたころがあった。「東洋の魔女」たちが１９６４年の東京オリンピックでバレー初の金メダルを獲得したし、１９７６年にも続い た。１９８０年のモスクワをボイコットしたあと、１９８４年のロスで銅メダルは確保したものの、その後メダルを獲得したことはなく、トップグループから姿 を消していった。２０００年のシドニーでは舞台に立つことさえ出来ず、栄光に向けての復活の道を歩んでいるところだ。
若いチームには経験も必要だ。チャンピオンに対して堂々と対峙し始めているようにも見える。次の北京での夏季オリンピックは本当に楽しみにしている。その頃には力が付いているんじゃないかと思うんだ！！

高校では体育は４年中、２年分の単位しか
いらなかったが、楽しかった記憶しかない。
バレーもやってけど、他にバスケや
フラッグフット（腰にフラッグを付けて
やるアメフト）をやったなぁ。
レスリングは確か中学だけだったけど。
懐かしいねぇ。
