interesting bookstores in Jimbocho... watching the documentary at my office...
After taking a long nap at home to brush away my fatigue of this past week, I went back to work in my office. Zapping on the TV nearby, my mind was taken away by a serious special documentary about the tragedies of Okinawa at the end of WW2. The documentary program was plotted out with testimonies of survivors from mass suicides and malnutrition from days of hiding. The beautiful islands of Okinawa were once a hell on earth as many other battlefields 60 years ago.
We all know war is nothing but tradegy and we all say "War is bad". But there's nothing more persuasive than the survivors' words. We shall see many superb documentaries made by various sorts of medium as it is the 60th year since the terrible war. But time is quickly running out for the hardworking historians and documentary makers to collect the truth as many survivors' days are numbered. Hope we'll get enough words from the true believers saying "No more war"...

朝一番に取材先と話した後、土曜日だったので急ぐ必要もないし、古本屋で埋め尽くされた神保町エリアを散策した。掘り出し物はなかったが、古い本に囲まれると創作意欲が研ぎ澄まされるんだよね！（神保町古書街の英語の説明ＵＲＬ）

こ の１週間の疲れを落とすために家で長い仮眠を取った後、仕事に戻るために職場に帰った。近くにあるテレビのチャンネルをいじってると、終戦時の沖縄の悲 劇を描いた重いスペシャル番組に心を奪われた。ドキュメンタリー番組は集団自決や潜伏する日々からくる栄養失調を免れた生存者たちの証言で構成されてい た。美しい沖縄の島々も６０年前、他の戦場と同じように一時は地球上の地獄と化していた。
戦争は悲劇以外の何物でもないことはみんな知ってるし、 みんな「戦争は悪い」と言う。でも生き残った人たちのことば以上に説得力があるものはない。終戦か ら６０年になるだけに色んな種類のメディアに よるたくさんの素晴らしいドキュメンタリーを見ることになるだろう。でも一生懸命な歴史家やドキュメンタリー 制作者が当時の真実を集める時間は急速に無くなっている。生き残っている人たちの寿命も限られているからだ。「戦争はいらない」と固く信じている人たちか ら十分ことばを集められることを望みたい。

俺たち「メディア」はあらゆる媒体を代表しているんだ。
テレビだろうが、新聞だろうが、ネットだろうが、
自動的に「メディア」の一員になってしまうのだ。
大切なのは手段じゃない。何を伝えるかだ。
