With all the papers covering the arrest of high ranking officers of the Defense Facilities Administration Agency which is under the Defense Agency, "the only one" had something different on the front page...

Sankei had something about the Defense Agency...
but different from all the others that was something very interesting to me...

防衛庁の下にある防衛施設庁の幹部たちの逮捕話で各紙の紙面が埋まる中、「ザ・オンリー・ワン」は違うものを１面に載せていた…。

As an insider, I knew the story all started from Kyodo's exclusive wiring, but also understood Sankei's position to bring the story to the front page...
So may it be... the JGSDF will be pulling out from Samawa in a while...
Some would shout "BRAVO!", some would say "they were still there!?", and some would question "what good did they do?"
I understand all these viewpoints... but it's a guilt not to argue about what all this was about... It was certainly a turning point in our nation's position in the international community... some will say for the better, and some will say for the worse... and I want to hear from a lot of people about their opinions that will mean debating about our nation's future...
A very specific subject to fight our thoughts together! I surely wanna be a part of it!

ということなんやね…陸自はしばらくするとサマワから撤退するんだね…。

For me, it's a only a simple matter... let's just get everything straightened out... what's wrong and what's right! The story ain't nothing more than that...

このホテルチェーンが苦しむより儲かるような気がするから変だよな。メディアにこれだけ注目されちゃってね…。
俺にとって、これは単純な話…ただちゃんとはっきりとしたいだけ…何が悪くて何は構わないのか！この話はそれ以上の話じゃないよ…。

　個人的には、いずれ誰かが発表するつもりがあるネタを
　単に各社に先駆けて書くだけのことは「特ダネ」だと
　思っていない。（早く書くことによって、その話の
　続報をどんどん先に出していくこと自体は、
　取材で先行できる点から評価しても良いと思ってるが）
　やっぱり誰かが書かなければ表に出なかったこと…
　大概は悪い話なんだが…
　それを書くことが特ダネだと思っている。
　それは自分が取り上げなかったら、表舞台に出ることは
　なかったというような「人」や自分が検証しなければ
　なぜそうなったのか分からなかったというような
　「ドキュメンタリー」でも良いと思う。
　ある事を単に「暴く」ことだけでなく、
　（芸能人の密会とかね！笑）
　暴いたあとでその意味をきっちり検証すること。
　つまりその暴いたことによって、社会的な問題点を
　「浮き上がらせる」ことができるものが真の特ダネだと思う。
　今回の朝日の話は特ダネだが、自衛隊の撤退はどうだろう。
　とにかく前者は障害者にとってはとんでもない話だし、
　そういうものを切って利益優先主義が商売で
　台頭してきていることを示すことができたと思う。
　何となくライブドアで勝負してきた検事たちにも
　同じような思いを感じる。
　俺は今まで記者としてそんなことができただろうか…。
　そんな立派な人間じゃないし、きばる必要はないけどね！

Another boring day, being asked to do some jobs I really didn't have much interest in.
またつまんない日。あんまし関心を持ってない仕事をやるように言われて。

As I've written last week, I was thinking about what new things I can do to appease my curiosity.
先週書いていたように、自分の好奇心を満たすためにどんな新しいことができるか考えていた。

I've looked at the web looking for electronic keyboards thinking about a revival of my piano skills.
I could try getting an iMac I wanted for years to have real fun with computers and also shift my music life to the iPod world.
I even thought of going out to get a pair of skis or maybe a set of golf clubs so I can broaden ways to spend my time off.
Second thoughts...

自分のピアノの腕前を蘇らせようと思って電子ピアノをウェブで探してみたり。
コンピューターを本格的に楽しもうと何年も欲しいなと思ってたｉＭａｃをゲットしてみて、さらに音楽ライフをｉＰｏｄの世界にシフトすることもできる。
スキー板やゴルフクラブのセットを買って、休暇を過ごす方法を広げることさえ考えてみた。
でもよ～く考えると…

I know my brain ain't flexible anymore to learn science... but maybe not if it has something to do with what I do at work.
It's too late for me to become a certified weather forecaster, but to be honest, I've never studied meteorology and since I've already spent 5 years practicing weather as a news coverage, studying this from the beginning could even help straightening out what I've been doing all these years!
Let's see what I can learn feeling like a FRESHMAN again!

科学を勉強するほどもう頭は柔らかくないことは知ってる…でも仕事に関係することなら別かもしんない。
気象予報士になるのは遅すぎるけど、正直言うと気象学って勉強したことが無くって、もう５年間もニュース報道における気象については実践してきたので、最初から勉強することはこの数年何をやってきたのか整理するのに助かるかもしんないし！
また「新人」のような気持ちで何か学べるかな！

certified weather forecaster　気象予報士
　certifiedは「資格」だという意味を表現している。
　weather forecasterだけなら天気予報官。
　日本では、普通は気象庁しかやってはいけない
　予報を業務して行うことを「資格」として認定して
　予報士さんにやってもらえるよう平成６年に
　この資格を創設した。
　ちなみに気象庁の予報資料や気象情報、
　もしくは気象予報士の資格を持った民間会社などが出す
　情報をもとに「解説」するだけなら、この資格は
　持って無くてもいいんで、気象を担当している記者も、
　お天気お姉さんも必ずしもこの資格を持ってる必要はない。
　だから、お天気お姉さんは可愛い女子大生でもいいんだ！
　っていうか、これだけ長く取材していると
　そんな資格なんて無くてもいいって分かるんだよね…。
　ま、でも持っていることで一般の人の信頼度は高まるかな。
　と言っても、予報士の資格を持ってるからって
　でたらめなことを言わないという担保も無いけどね…。
　ちなみに予報官・天気予報のキャスター・気象学者は
　このほかにweather manとかweather personとも言う。

I had a really pleasant time with a really long time friend tonight.
"A long time but no see" friend!!
We talked together drinking... but we couldn't figure out when we've last met...
It was at least ten years ago, as we've never seen each other after graduating from college!

今夜はすごく古くからのダチと本当に楽しい時間を過ごした。
「長い間会ってねぇ」ダチだ！！
飲みながら一緒に話した…でも最後にいつ会ったのか分からなかった…。
少なくとも１０年は経っている。大学を卒業してから会ってないから！

So pleasant...
it's hard to describe this feeling, but after all we were smiling all the way!
Talking about how we met 16 years ago at crammer school in Osaka and how we were kids just having fun... yes, JUST HAVING FUN...

We said good-bye, promising we will meet more often from now on!!
Good to be staying alive you know...
yes... this is why we try to live on!!

楽しいねぇ…
この気持ちを字にするのは難しいけど、要するに最後まで笑ってたってことさ！
１６年前大阪の予備校で会ってとにかく楽しいことをしまくってたガキだったことを話して…そう、とにかく楽しかったねぇ…

A chilly day with some cold winds...
My elder collegue invited me to Fuchu RC for both of my days off this weekend, and as Fuchu is now a home ground to me just like Yodo was in my college years, I was mostly happy to fight off my stress at this fantasy world.
冷たい風が吹く寒い日…。
先輩が今週末の両日、府中競馬場にご招待してくれた。大学時代の淀のように府中は今や自分の庭のようなもんなだけに、この幻想の世界でストレスを解消できる喜ばしいことだ。

何か応援できるものがあるってのは俺たちの誇りだった…
ライスボウルのことを書いたことがあるように、うちのチームって全幅の信頼を置いてたんだけど…。

I have no privilege to speak for these guys arrested for commiting rape...
Who knows how young boys and girls would behave when they're under the influence of alcohol and young enough to be excited by anything...
It's so hard to draw a line between what's wrong and what's right when you're young and it may be a matter of "love" which is so obscure when you're so young...
強姦の疑いで逮捕された奴らのために何かを言う権利はない…。
酔っぱらってると若い男と女がやっちゃうことなんてマジメに考えたって。若いってことで何でも楽しいし…。
若いと何が悪くて何が良いのかの線引きってすごく難しくて、「愛」があるかどうかなんて若いときは本当に曖昧で…。

I can't blame our juniors having fun as the devil behind me whispers thinking about what I was doing when I was the younger... but the angel whispers that being responsible about what you do is all that you've got to continue on as a human being and not a dumb animal...
自分が若かったときやってたことを考えると、悪魔が耳元で囁いて後輩たちが楽しいことをやっちゃうことを責めるつもりはないが…でも天使が囁くのは、やはりやることすべてに責任は持たないといけないということ。野蛮な動物ではなく、人間でいるためには…。

It might be too late for our juniors, but at least they can now be responsible about what they have done!

After yesterday's press conference about the earthquake and tsunami loss estimations, I went out to drink with the government officials in charge of the report and with one of them I had drinks till four in the morning today.
Because of all the "Hakkaisan" I had, I was mostly knocked out in my office in the morning...
昨日の地震と津波の被害想定の会見のあと、国側の担当者たちと飲みに出掛けた。そのうちの一人ときょうの朝４時まで飲んでしまった。
「八海山」を飲み過ぎて、午前中、職場でほとんどグロッキー状態だった…。

After recovering in the afternoon, I went to University of Tokyo to say hello to a bunch of researchers for the first time this year.
And I already had forgotten I had a severe hangover... inviting an assistant professor out to drink...
午後に復活すると、たくさんの研究者たちに今年初めての挨拶のために東大に行った。
そしてひどい二日酔いだったことはすっかり忘れちゃって…助教授を飲みに誘って…

The special board of the Central Disaster Management Council announced today that an estimated 2700 deaths will turn out when a mega-tsunami of a Meiji Sanriku type earthquake hits the eastern coast of the Tohoku Area.

中央防災会議の専門調査会がきょう、明治三陸タイプの地震による巨大津波が東北地方の東側沿岸を襲うと２７００人が犠牲になると推定されると発表した。

The Special Board of Inquiry on trench-centered earthquakes around the Japan Trench and Chishima Trench also reported that the number of deaths can be cut drastically if the residents of the area will flee from the coastal areas appropriately when the tsunami starts its deadly attacking.
A mega-tsunami just like the one that hit the Indian Ocean can occur so easily in our nation.
...but all we have to do is run away from the coastal area accordingly and if we can help each other when that day will come, I want to believe there will be no deaths even if a killer tsunami attacks!!

日本海溝・千島海溝周辺海溝型地震に関する専門調査会はさらに、津波がもし破壊的な攻撃を始めるときに、周辺の住民が沿岸部から適切に逃げたなら、この死者の数は大幅に減らせるということも報告した。
インド洋を襲ったような巨大津波はこの国では簡単に起きてしまう。
…でもきっちりと沿岸部から走って離れることさえできれば良いんだ。その時が来たら、お互いを助けることができれば、例え破壊的な津波が襲ってきても、誰も死なないと信じたいものだ！！

Spending some tedious hours today at my office, as it was my fault I was ready for tomorrow a little too early.
With all the experience I have with the job I'm in charged of now, I probably don't need so much time as I did years ago to get ready for anything.
I better start thinking about better ways to use my time!

きょうは職場でちょっと手持ち無沙汰の時間を過ごしちゃった。明日の準備をちょっとだけ早くしすぎちゃって反省。

フィールドの１２番目の選手が優勝候補のシーホークスを押し上げた。お気に入りのＮＦＣ西地区に所属するこのチームは、鉄のカーテンのスティーラーズと対戦することになった。
ＭＶＰのリーディングラッシャーと４位ランクのＱＢはＡＦＣの第１シードと対戦はしないんだ…。１位ランクのマニングとその仲間たちとの対戦はきっとすごかっただろうけど、「ザ・バス」が初めて、そしてたぶん最後だと言われている、一年間における唯一無二の試合に登場するというのも結構エキサイティングなことでしょ！！

　フィールド上の１２番目の選手
　シーホークスの球場には、
　永久欠番になっている背番号１２のジャーシーが
　旗のように風にひらめいている。
　アメフトはサッカーのようにフィールドに
　１１人の選手しか出られないが、
　観客が１２番目の選手として
　後押しをしているというこのチームの伝統だ。
　実際、敵の攻撃の時に、観客がものすごい歓声を
　挙げるためにクォーターバックがでっかい声で
　プレーをスタートする直前にいくら指示しようとしても、
　少しでも離れている選手には聞こえず、
　時には、フォルススタートといって、攻撃側が
　早めに動いてしまうという反則をしてしまう場合がある。
　最近はサッカーでも応援をして、選手を元気づけるということで、
　１２番目の選手にみんななれるということが浸透してきているが、
　アメフトではまさしく相手の戦術を邪魔して、
　形勢を有利にすることさえ出来るんだ。
　シアトルで試合見たら、ヨーロッパで

I tried to ignore the television sets all lined up at our news center, as I didn't want to know how the football game was doing...
ニュースセンターに並んでいるテレビを無視しようとしてた。フットボールの試合がどうなってるか知りたくなかったから…。

But another Livedoor breaking news came in tonight, and my eyes were all aimed up to the special programs hosted by several stations...
Unfortunately I found out that Seattle which I was going to cheer for, was doing fine, as the satellite channel came into sight by accident...
でも、また今夜、ライブドアの大ニュースが入ってきた。お目々は幾つかの局がやっていた特番を狙い撃ちしてしまい…。
残念ながら、衛星チャンネルが視野に入ってきてしまって、応援しようと思っていたシアトルが、まぁまぁいい感じだということが分かってしまった…。

　アメリカでは、俺の高い「コンドー」はとか
　あいつのでっかい「コンドー」はとか
　お年頃のオトコなら、何か別のことを
　言ってるんじゃないかと思っちゃう
　略し方でコンドミニウムのことを話してます。
　ちなみに日本で言う「マンション」は
　mansionというと、何のこと言ってんのか
　分からん顔されちゃいます。
　俺のマンション（特に賃貸の場合）って
　言う場合、どんなにご立派なところでも、
　apartmentを使ってた。
　外人さまがapartmentと言っても
　「アパート」じゃなくて、
　「マンション」だ！！と思わないように。

Five years ago, Ryogoku was one of my activity bases when I was in charged of the eastern end of Tokyo being responsible for the Seventh District Headquarter of MPD, therefore being a very familiar place for me.
But I didn't have any time to make adventures today, as I went running back home right after I finished sending in my article!!

I had to read a pile of tricky but unexciting documents today to get ready for something to cover next week.
SLOW PROGRESS though, as I was a little tired from all the work till yesterday...

来週の取材に向けて準備するためにきょうは小難しくつまらない資料の山を読まないといけなかった。
な～かなかはかどらないんだ、これが。昨日までの仕事でちょびっと疲れてたし…。

I really don't like to read dull papers at my office, and I'd rather go out and BLITZ my sources being tricky to surprise them...
But maybe my collegues out there would rather like to read documents in the office that wouldn't need any tricks, than wait for sources at their residences without any confirmation of their coming home...
Walking home this terribly freezing night, I had second thoughts... the grass is greener on the other side of the fence... They're saying it's going to be colder tomorrow... maybe I'd rather stay in that nice and warm office and read whatever...

職場で退屈な資料を読むのは好きじゃない。それよりは外に出て、気の利いた技を使って取材先を襲撃して驚かせに行きたいね…。
でも外にいる同僚たちは何の技も必要としない職場での資料読みの方が良いと言うかも知れない。帰ってくるかも分からない取材先を家の前で待ってるより…。
恐ろしく凍えそうな夜の中歩いて帰ってみると、考えが変わってきた…隣の芝生はよく見えるんだよね…。明日はもっと寒くなるって言ってるし…やっぱりあったかくて心地良い職場で何でも良いから読んでる方がいいのかも…。

I don't know how to say this Japanese proverb in English, but my message is simple...
I continued writing my diary for a year!!
It wasn't hard to do so... there were days I only have written about 10 words.

英語でこの日本のことわざを何というのかは分からないけど、言いたいことは簡単です…。
１年間、この日記を書き続けました！！
大変でも何でもなかった…だって１０語程度しか書いてない日もあるんだから。

But as I'm keeping a backup for all of my posts, this diary will remain forever, and I can come back to see what I had done and what I had thought these days in the middle of a really dynamic point of age.
With something on my diary everyday, I can easily see the ebb and flow of my life. When I was happy and when I wasn't!
So I believe that continuing to do small things will eventually lead to success. Well then, maybe the proverb is something close to "Rome was not built in a day".

でもすべての書き込みのバックアップを取ってあるから、この日記は永遠に残る。そして人生の中でもかなりダイナミックなこの時期に、何をして何を考えたか、振り返ることができる。
日記に毎日何か書き込みがあることで、生活の浮き沈みが見事に分かる。嬉しかったときも、そうじゃ無かったときも！
ということで、俺はきっと小さなことも続けると立派なものになると信じてるんだね。そう言う意味では、このことわざは「ローマは一日にして成らず」というのに近いかな。

Little by little and bit by bit I will go on writing this diary.
And one day I will know how everyday was worth living, even if it were a painful day...

Today I was covering a international meeting at the United Nations University near Omotesando. I've covered international matters quite a bit, but surprisingly this was my first visit to UNU. There's still so many places I haven't visited in Tokyo!

Out to Shizuoka today to cover a massive DR drill.
The aim for me to go all the way out to a place needing an hour long Shinkansen ride was the national governmental role-playing training held at the Shizuoka Prefectural Office.

新幹線で一時間のところに出かけたきょうの狙いは、静岡県庁で行われた政府の図上訓練だ。

It was a good training for me too to watch the more than hundred government officials running around to gather information and making critical decisions.
A stimulating January 17th thinking about disaster reduction...
I always want to believe me and all these guys training today are ready for it...
but I still hope nothing destructive would ever happen...

１００人以上の国の職員が情報を集めて、重要な判断をしていく様子を見ることは、自分にとっても良いトレーニングになった。
防災について考える刺激的な１月１７日になった…。
自分自身も、この人たちみんなも準備が出来ているといつも信じたい…
でもやっぱり破滅的なことは起きて欲しくないなと祈ってしまう…。

There's many things I can call it a WIN... Well if I can go to the hoops, maybe hitting 5 in a row from downtown could be a WIN... Riding my bicycle to Fuchu within 75 minutes could well be a WIN... But recently, it's about betting on horseys! I bet you won't understand, but it's more challenging and it's more fun to go out on shopping that way... yes, after you WIN!!
I know it's going too far if I make it a rule I can ask a girl out on a date only if I WIN... But you know... maybe I'll WIN every week if that would become a solid rule...

でっかいもん、特に家や不動産かなんかを買う野望が無いと、自分を満足させてくれるものを買う金って十分にあるんだよね…別にフェラーリやクルーザー、いやグランドピアノを買う金が十分にあるって言ってるんじゃないよ…そんなのん別にどうでもいいんだよ。だってそんなもんにかける時間が無いもん…
でもＣＤ買ったり…美味いもん食べたり…かっちょいい服買ったり…買うのに別に制限が無いようなもんのこと…
だから決まり事があるんだ！楽しみのために金を使うのは勝ったときだけ！
勝ちって呼べるものはたくさんあるよ…。まぁバスケに行けるんなら、スリーポイントを５回連続で決めれたら勝ちって言えるかもね…。自転車で府中に７５分以内に行けたら勝ちかもしんない…。でも最近は、お馬ちゃんに賭けることかな！分かってくんないと思うけど、その方がもっと挑戦的になるし、買い物ももっと楽しくなるんだよね…そう、勝ったあとはね！！
もし勝ったときだけ女の子をデートに誘っても良いっていう決まりにするのは行き過ぎだって分かってる。でもどうかな…ひょっとしたらそれを絶対の決まり事にしちゃうと毎週勝つかも…
