Day 10

My last day at Noto.

I went out to cover the entrance ceremony at Monzen Nishi Elementary School.
The schools of the disaster zone had postponed its start four days till today.
It was nice to see kids smiling to get to school to see their classmates.
More than anything else, it sure would be encouraging for the sufferers from the quake here in Noto to see their younger ones smiling!

能登で最後の日。

門前西小学校の入学式を取材した。
被災地の学校は今日まで始業を延期していた。
クラスメートを見るために子供たちが笑顔で学校を行くのを見るのは楽しいね。
そして何よりもきっと若い世代が笑っているのを見て、ここ能登の被災者が勇気づけられるよ！

Day 9

It was election day in the disaster zone too.

In the morning, the Kanazawa Local Meteorological Observatory announced that "the cherry blossoms have started to bloom" at Wajima.

they surely have! they will be in full bloom after five days... obviously... after I'm gone!

I had to cover the election here in Monzen Area, which was rather a pain in the neck, and today was one of the worst days here.
I have less than a day to go, and I hope I can leave this town with some satisfaction about this job, which I don't have at this moment...

被災地でも選挙の日だった。

朝には、金沢地方気象台が、輪島で「桜が開花した」と発表した。
写真：咲いたね！五日間ほどで満開になる…あきらかに…俺がいなくなったあとだ！
門前地区での選挙を取材しなければならんかった。結構ウザイ感じ。きょうはここでの最悪の日だったな。
残りあと一日もないや。この仕事をやって少しでも満足をして町を離れることができたらいいな。今はまだ満足してないし…。

Being an outsider

Day 8

Starting to think about my way out.
Yes, I'm not going to stay here forever, and it's better for my colleagues to cover the news that have to do about people who will have to fight through this disaster.

Today, I covered the news about housing advisors and volunteers. They were all from out of town, just like I am.

ここから出るときのことを考え始めていた。
そう。俺はここに永遠に残ることはないんだから、同僚たちがこの災害を闘い抜かないと行けない人たちの取材をする方が良いんだ。

きょうは住宅の相談員とボランティアのニュースを取材した。みんな町の外から来た人たちだ。俺のように。

Day 7

A warm day. Nice and sunny.

I started the day going to a training institute of traditional industrial arts to cover their entrance ceremony.

the Wajima Traditional Technical Training Institute... a place to learn about lacquered wares, the Wajima Nuri, starting their new year in the middle of a disaster restoration process...

Unexpectedly, we were able to use the toilets from today. Great news!
But I had a real tooth ache, and it was tough to concentrate on work... and also at night, we had to share rooms with each other at a tourist home after moving out from a hotel I stayed for 6 nights...
Is it getting worse or is it getting better!?
Physically, at least, I'm starting to wear out!

暖かい日。良く晴れて。

きょうは最初に伝統工芸品の研修所の入学式を取材した。
写真：輪島漆芸技術研修所…輪島塗の漆器について学ぶところ、震災復興を進める中で年度が始まった…

予想外に、今日からトイレが使えるようになった。嬉しい知らせだ！
でもきょうはマジで歯が痛くて、仕事に集中するのが辛かった…そして夜になって今度は、六夜過ごしたホテルから出て民宿で相部屋に入ることになってしまった…。
これって改悪なのか、改善なのか！？
体力的には、少なくとも、疲れがたまってきてるね！

tourist home　民宿
能登では、前半、ビジネスホテルに泊まっていたが、
途中から民宿にスイッチ。この民宿ってのが
英語で何というのか、引っかかった。辞書をひくと、
"a private house providing bed and meals"とある。
（イギリス英語だと"guesthouse"らしい）
それより別の辞書にあった"tourist home"の方が
しっくり行くので、とりあえずtourist homeで書いた。
輪島市にも民宿の近くにあったが、日本には
「ペンション」ってのもたくさんある。
日本語辞書には、「民宿風の小ホテル。民宿の家族的
雰囲気とホテルの機能性を兼ね備えた宿泊施設」とあるが、
泊まってた民宿は、どっちかと言えば、こっちの説明に
近いものだった。ペンションは「フランス･ベルギーなどの
下宿屋または下宿式のホテル」とも説明があるので、
和風な民宿には似合わない表現なのかも知れない。
観光地には他に旅館もあるが、これは単純に"hotel"、
丁寧に書くなら"Japanese style hotel"と書くしかないか。
逆にアメリカで良く泊まる"motel"は日本語に訳しようがない。
「モーテル」でも最近は、分かるだろうか。

Day 6

It was much warmer today!

I went to the Wajima City Hall for the first time today. The sewage service was working there, and the toilets were in use. We still have to use temporary toilet services at the Monzen Office and there's a heaven and hell difference, as in the Monzen Area, bathing is still in no use either for the sufferers.
I hope it gets warm enough for the sufferers here in the Monzen area.

At night, we went out for the first time to get some alcohol and sushi. It was freezing at night, and a hot "atsukan" sake helped me warm up, feeling much better...

第６日

きょうはかなり暖かかくなってきた！

きょう初めて輪島市役所に行った。下水は大丈夫だし、トイレも使えた。門前支所では仮設のトイレを使わないといけなかったし、天国と地獄の差がある。門前町では被災者にとっては風呂も入れない状態のままだし。
門前町で被災者にとって十分に暖かくなることを祈ってるよ。

夜になって、初めてアルコールとお寿司をゲットしようと出掛けた。夜は凍える寒さで、温かい熱燗が体を温めるのに役立った。少しは気分が晴れた…。

Behind the season!?

タイトル：季節遅れ！？

Day 5

It was a below zero degree start this morning, as the ground was slightly white with snow... I got all wet covering the news outside leaving my umbrella behind, and as my shoes were soaked with water it was a really awful day...

And in the afternoon...

rain turned to snow! thick snow!

Though it only snowed for an hour or so, I think I'd had enough of it. I hope it'll get sunny enough to makes us all smile!

けさ零度以下のスタートとなった。地面が雪でうっすらと白くなっていた…。
傘を置いて外でニュース取材をしていたらべしょ濡れになった。そして靴が水につかってしまったため、マジで酷い日になった…

そして午後には…
雨が雪に変わった！濃い雪だ！

一時間ほど雪が降っただけなのに、もう十分だと思った。俺たちみんなを笑顔にしてくれるほどの晴れ間が欲しいね！

Day 4

Pretty cold throughout the day... I remained mostly inside the Monzen Office today and moving the press room to a different floor was an important task to accomplish.

While moving out, at the corner of the room, I found...

a clock which lost its life by the jolt! the time of impact: 9:42!
(PS: the clock's showing 9:48... maybe the clock was running about 6 minutes faster...)

一日中寒めの日だった…。
きょうはほとんど門前支所の中に残った。記者室を違う場所に移すのが重要な任務だった。

引っ越しに伴って部屋の隅にこんなものを見つけた…

It was a day of starting for the disaster zone too.
But many of the elders had no sign of starting, as their tough lives at the refuge space continued... for us, it was getting harder and harder to find news to cover and it surely could be more tougher as time passes by!

被災地にとっても始まりの日だった。
でもお年寄りの人たちにとっては始まる気配もなかった。避難所での厳しい生活は続くばかりだから…俺たちにとってはニュース取材をするのに厳しさが増すばかり。時間が経つにつれてますます厳しくなるんだろうね！

Day 2

Noboby said a word that it was April Fools.
Well, nobody actually cares if it were April Fools.

It was a beautiful day, as it was a little bit warm with sunshine in the morning.

the houses near the Monzen Office laid crushed...
it's amazing nobody had lost their lives in these houses!

Lots of panicking again with too many work to be done...
ah... I'm already regretting I took this job!

エイプリルフールとは誰も言わなかった。
エイプリルフールだろうが誰も興味もないわな。

良い天気で、朝は太陽光のおかげで少し暖かかった。

たくさん仕事がありすぎてかなりパニくったな…
ああ…この仕事を引き受けるって言ったのを後悔し始めてるよ！

Into the disaster-stricken area

タイトル：被災地へ

Day 1

First thing in the morning, I took the plane to Noto from Haneda.
It would really be a nice place to visit if it were not for the earthquake...

I reached the hardest hit Monzen Area of Wajima City right after noon.

It was raining from time to time, and I would have loved to get wet, as I was already crying in my mind hearing there were tons of work to be done... oh what a start...

朝一番に、羽田から能登へ向かう飛行機に乗った。地震が無ければ訪問するのには良いとこなんだろうけど。

正午直後に最も大きな被害を受けた輪島市門前地区に到着した。

時折雨が降ったが、濡れるのは大歓迎だったよ。だって腐るほど仕事があるって聞いて心の中ではもう泣いてたから…。

被災地に行ったのは久しぶりだった。
2004年の台風２３号の舞鶴市～新潟県中越地震の
小千谷市の１週間ちょっとの出張以来か。
体力的にはきついミッションだったが、
やはり現場ほど学ぶことが多いところは無い。
その被災地を訳すと、「災害で被害を受けた地域」で
"disaster-striken area"となるが、もっとくだけた表現で
disaster zoneという言い方も一般的だ。
カトリーナの被災地がそうだったが、海外メディアは
９１１以降、本来は広島や長崎といった核攻撃の爆心地として
使われる"ground zero"「グラウンド・ゼロ」を多用して、
無神経だと批判を受けているようだ。
WTCの被害も、最近の地震の被害も、核爆撃による犠牲者とは
規模や数で比べものにならないが、被災者にとっては、
自然災害と戦争被害の違いはあったとしても、悲惨さは一緒だ。
それを使うメディアが無神経なんじゃなくて、
人の命を比べることの方が無神経だろう。

Aftershocks!

タイトル：余震！

The number of aftershocks easily reached over 200 today in the Noto Area. How tough it would be to continue on with nuisance all over them!

many of our colleagues and our rivals working for the same objective: for a faster recovery!

きょう能登地方の余震の数はあっさり２００を超えた。ウザイものがずっと起きている中、前の進むのがどれほど大変なことか！

Cry for the moon!

タイトル：無いものねだり！

All night long, I had to read papers for work, and together with my colleagues we also had to cover the news about the Shinkansen being stopped because of a dead man found in a tunnel in Shizuoka.

In the morning, just as overnight duty was going to end in a couple of hours, someone pulled the trigger!!

at 9:42AM... a magnitude of 6.9 quake hitting the Noto penninsula of Ishikawa!

With less than an hour of sleep, I had to work till the evening. Oh if I had known this was going to happen... I would've slept more... crying for the moon, right!?

夜通し、仕事の資料を読まねばならなかった。そして同僚と一緒に静岡のトンネルで男性の死体が見つかったために止まっていた新幹線のニュースも取材しないといけなかった。
朝になって、あと２～３時間で泊まり勤務も終わるってとこで、誰かが引き金を引いた！！
画像：午前９時４２分…マグニチュード６．９の地震が石川の能登半島を直撃した！
１時間未満の睡眠で、夕方まで働かないといけなかった。こういうことになるって分かってたら…もっと寝たのに…これって無いものねだりだよね！？

日本ではcry～の方がポピュラーのようだが、
Charles Dickensが1800年代半ばに使ったことが
始まりで、その後、唄のタイトルにもなっている。
しかし、英語圏ならask～の方が使用度が高いか。
他にもwish～というのもある。
moon（月）は昔の人には遠いもの。
手の届かないところにあるものということで、
それを欲しがるのは「無いものねだり」という
分かりやすく、きれいな誇張法のイディオムだ。
でも今や、月も手の届くところにある。
少しＩＴで儲けりゃ、宇宙船に乗って行けるところ。
なんかこのイディオムを台無しにしてしまいそうなのが、
ちょっと頂けない。
