Today I met lawyers from Hyogo Prefecture whom I haven't met for about half a decade.
They were here to discuss with lawyers from every parts of the nation about what they can do when large scale disasters like the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake occurs.

When I was in my fourth and fifth year as a reporter, I was covering the Kobe District Court being in charge of the judicial news in Hyogo. In those days, I used to meet lawyers almost everyday looking for news that no other agency would know. Since it was still the recovering stage from the great disaster, lawyers took their precious time to think over what they could have done right after the disaster and what they can do much after it.
I was happy to hear the lawyers were still working on the issue. Giving out free legal advice with their own expences after disasters is a real volunteering job and yet they don't hesitate to help the disaster hit sufferers. The lawyers from Hyogo are really trying to help the other bar associations to build their own disaster and crisis management plan to make swift assistance to the sufferers. A movement I sure would like to support!

I was happy enough to see their fulfilled smiling faces working on a worthwhile job, but evem more delighted I was when they told me I've grown up as a reporter as they've checked my appearances on the air from time to time.
Yes, I think I've made much progress from those days in Kobe. And with this job, I can make even more progress as it's not exaggerating to tell anyone that I learn something new every week.
Renewing my understanding how lucky I've been to choose this job, and with everyone's help my never-ending hunt for progress will never end till I quit!!

きょうは兵庫県から来た弁護士たちに５年ぶりに会った。
彼らは国内の隅々から集まった弁護士たちと阪神・淡路大震災のような大規模な地震が起きた場合に何ができるのか話し合うためにやってきた。

俺が記者として４年目と５年目だったときに神戸地裁を担当して、兵庫県内の司法ニュースを取り仕切っていた。あのころはほとんど毎日弁護士に会って、他社 が知らないようなニュースを探し回っていた。当時はまだ大災害からの復興期だったので、弁護士たちも貴重な時間を割いて災害の直後に何ができたのか、そし てしばらく経った後に何ができるのか考えていた。
弁護士たちがまだこうした課題に取り組んでいることを聞いて嬉しかった。災害のあとに自費で無料の法律相談を やるのは本当にボランティア仕事だ。なのに、彼らは災害で苦しむ被災者を助けることに二の足を踏むことはない。兵庫の弁護士たちは他県の弁護士会が被災者 に素早い支援を行うための災害と危機管理の計画を立ち上げるのを本気で助けようと努力している。きっちりと支えてあげたい動きだ！

やりがいのある仕事をしている満たされた笑顔を見るのも嬉しかったが、さらに嬉しいことに彼らが記者として成長していると言ってくれたことだ。時々テレビに映っているのを見てくれていたらしい。
そう、神戸にいたころよりかなり成長したと思う。そしてこの仕事をやっている以上、さらに成長ができる。毎週何か新しいことを学んでいるとみんなに言ってるが、決して大げさに言ってる訳ではない。
この仕事を選んで幸運だったなという理解を新たにして、みんなの助けで成長をするための終わることのない追求は辞めるときまで続くんだ！！

　災害直後、相談に訪れる人の多くは法律家の
　専門的なアドバイスではなく、心の相談が必要な
　人たちだそうだ。そういった人たちも追い返すことなく
　話をすることで被災した絶望の気持ちを和らげる。
　そんなことを無償で行う心温かい弁護士たちも
　数多くいるのだ。
