Many, like me, would feel uncomfortable talking about homosexuality, but the Oscar's voters shouldn't, as they have to pick the best film, just as it is, and uncomfortablility shouldn't be an element...
Ang Lee did win the best director award, becoming the first ever Asian to win a major Oscar catagory, but not the best picture, as his controversial but most favorite "Brokeback Mountain" gave way to "Crash".
I haven't watched any of the films, so I don't deserve the pleasure to analyze the decisions myself, but I know the best place to look for a analysis!

同性愛について話すのは、俺を含めた多くの人が話すのは居心地が悪いと思うんだけど、オスカーの審査員はそうじゃダメで、どの映画が一番なのか、そのまんま決めないといけない。居心地が悪いかどうかなんて要素であってはならない…。
アン・リーは最優秀監督賞は受賞した。オスカーの主要部門を受賞した初めてのアジア人となったが、最優秀作品賞は取らなかった。論争を呼んだものの一番人気だった「ブロークバック・マウンテン」は「クラッシュ」に道を譲った形だ。
どの映画も見てないんで、今回の結果を分析をする権利は無いが、どこを見たら、分析が見られるのかは分かるよ！

"Howl's Moving Castle", as expected did not win the animated feature film, which was awarded to the much more favored "Wallace & Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit".
And three artistic awards went to "Memoirs of Geisha".

「ハウルの動く城」は予想通り長編アニメ映画賞は獲らなかった。獲ったのはさらに人気があった「ウォレスとグルミット／野菜畑で大ピンチ！」
そして芸術系３部門が「SAYURI」に。
