Osaka Toin's Hirata wacked the ball in the seventh inning to capture the lead again with his third homerun!
Koshien, where the tournament is played, is the home for the Hanshin Tigers located in Nishinomiya City of Hyogo Prefecture where I was based at in my freshmen year as a reporter. Lots of sweet and bitter memories around that area!

Overnight duty today!
Before going to work, as I watched the high school baseball summer tournament's quarterfinal, Osaka Toin High School's slugger hit three homeruns in the first game today against Miyagi's Tohoku High School. Only the second player to smack three in a game, as he ties the record the now Yomiuri Giants' legendary Kiyohara made in 1984. Wow!
The high school baseball tournament was once a real popular source of entertainment in the summer vacation times. Now with many other sports becoming popular, especially among kids, the games have been sadly losing its appeal.
The top news about high school baseball nowadays is when bad things happen, like a popular player being caught smoking, or a team getting punished for taking anti-social behaviors.
After a long silence, maybe today's record setting news will capture tomorrow's front pages of the sports newspapers as something cheerful!!

大会が行われている甲子園は阪神タイガースの本拠地で、兵庫県の西宮市にある。自分の新人記者時代の拠点だった街だ。甘くも辛くも色んな思い出が残っているところだ！

仕事に行く前に、高校野球夏大会の準々決勝を見ていたら、大阪桐蔭高校のスラッガーが東北高校との第一試合で三本のホームランを打った。三本を一試合で打った選手としては二人目で、現在読売巨人軍にいる伝説的な清原が１９８４年に作った記録に並ぶものだ。すげー！
高校野球大会は一時、夏休み時期ではかなり人気がある催し物だった。特に子どもの間で他のスポーツが人気となってきている中、悲しいことにこの球技は魅力 を失いつつある。最近の高校野球のトップニュースは、悪いことが起きたときのものばかり。人気がある選手が煙草を吸っているところが撮られたり、反社会的 な行為をしてチームが処罰されたり。
きょうの記録が作られたニュースは、久しぶりに嬉しい話として明日のスポーツ紙の一面をかざるかも知れないね！！
