While I was in overnight duty, I found an interesting book lying on the bookshelf in my office. Sting's autobiography translated into Japanese laid there almost untouched. Started to read the first chapter overwhelmed by its artistic touch...
15 hours later at home, after letting my sleepiness have its way, I took out one of my favorite albums of all time, "The Dream of the Blue Turtles", Sting's first solo album.
When I was listening to this album repeatedly on my cassette player when I was a junior high school kid, I didn't understand even a one thirds of what the singer was trying to say, but now maybe it improved to two thirds as I know reached the same age he published this album...
Social and political messages from songs like "Children's Crusade" and "Russians", I still need experiences of being a dad to understand, but I'm starting to take in his lyrics about love and our future in songs like "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" and "We Work The Black Seam".
The album starts a little poppish, but actually is filled with jazzy notes and reggae beats with the Police ingredients spiced in. Funny to hear some lines from "Every Breath You Take" in "Love Is The Seventh Wave".
Though my favorite is "Fortress Around Your Heart", the spirit of love I agree with is rather more said in the first song...

It's already 20 years since this album came out. The world has changed and there's no more Cold War. But we still have nukes, and I think the concept is still the same...

Yeah, I think we all can be saved as I firmly believe the North Koreans love their children too. But it's funny to think how Reagan and Bush Jr. are similar in preaching about "winnable wars".

The world may still be the same after all...

泊まりがけの勤務をしていたら、職場の本棚に興味深い本が置いてあるのを見つけた。日本語に翻訳されたスティングの自叙伝がほとんど手つかずに横たわっていたのだ。最初の章を読み始めたが、そのアーティステックなタッチに圧倒された…。
１５時間後、うちで睡魔に襲われるままにしたあと、人生で最も好きなアルバムの一つを取り出した。スティングの初めてのソロアルバムの「ブルー・タートルの夢」だ。
中学生のガキんちょだったときにこのアルバムを繰り返しカセットプレーヤーで聴いていたときはこのシンガーが言いたかったことの３分の１も理解していなかったが、彼がこのアルバムを公表した年齢と同じ歳になって、それは３分の２ぐらいにはなったようだ…。
「チルドレンズ・クルセイド」や「ラシアンズ」にあるような社会的で政治的なメッセージについて理解するためには父親になるという経験も必要だが、「セット・ゼム・フリー」や「黒い傷あと」で愛や未来について彼が語る詞は受け入れられるようになってきた。
アルバムはちょっとポップな感じで始まるが、実際はジャズとレゲェの音色とビートで埋め尽くされている。ザ・ポリスのスパイスも混ぜながら。「見つめていたい」の歌詞が「ラヴ・イズ・ザ・セヴンス・ウェイヴ」の中で聴かれるのは痛快だ。
「フォートレス・アラウンド・ユア・ハート」がお気に入りだが、恋愛について理解できるようになった考え方はどちらかと言えば最初の唄の方で歌われている…

このアルバムが出てからすでに２０年が経った。世界情勢は変わって、冷戦は終わった。でもまだ核兵器はあるし、コンセプトは変わらないんじゃないかな…。

そうだね。みんな救われるさ。北朝鮮の人たちも自分の子供を愛していると強く信じているし。でも、レーガンとブッシュジュニアが「勝てる戦争」について言いふらしてるってことが似通ってるのを考えると面白いね。

世界は結局、変わってないのかも知れないな…。
