Tonight I saw a documentary about the Kokudo group (http://www.kokudo.co.jp/) , a conglomerate with a history of heavy development of hotels and resorts.
The documentary was about how the Tsutsumi family, especially Yoshiaki Tsutsumi, just released on bail with a hundred million yen. (mentioned his name in http://hide3diary.blogspot.com/2005/03/japlish.html) From when it was his father's days, and when he was a young entrepreneur, they have bought out many valueless land and changed it into money-making luxuries. Of course this all made the Tsutsumi family billionaires, but the main point of the documentary was that what supported Kokudo's ambitions were the dreams of the people in the countryside wanting to lure tourists and what more, attentions to their local towns and villages.

The documentary introduced many of these dreams brought to deadlock, as those of having a summit in the suburbs of Kyoto, nor bringing the Winter Games to Naeba, a then worthless land in Niigata.
I don't blame anyone of having dreams of winning and stepping up to a more developed and rich life. But still many lessons should have been learned by these stories. This was a story of real estates and development, which after the bubble burst, have haunted Japan for decades. Now, let's ask to ourselves the same questions... Isn't this going to happen again with the IT industry? Well only history will give us the answer!
