Last night in GenSan

Heneral Santos! heavy traffic and appetizing yakitoris
a mass in a church, security men at work, Nash saved the team again!

Cleaned up our mess in General Santos. Withdrawing all the machinery for broadcasting and making sure nothing will be left behind.
I had time today to take a walk through the city. A local city with lots of traffic and people. As expected, the city was filled with Christianity though Islamic resistance were controlling nearby mountains.
Cute Filipinos were walking around in the area (...but they were all powdered up with makeup... and of course... can't compare with lovely Yamato Nadeshikos!) and the food was terrific (especially the chicken in a restaurant was delicious with a teriyaki taste that the Japanese love).
Though I wanted to go out on adventures, the police have been warning us not to walk around as many kidnappers and probable terrorists were around, so I just trotted in the center of the city. At least I found General Santos! He was told to be the one that had built the city bringing in refugees to plow the fields for crops.
I don't know if I'll ever return to this place (probably not!), but next time I pray the city will be peaceful and wealthier. Thanks for everything!

P.S.
On my free time at night, I watched the SA Spurs-Phoenix Suns game. The Suns stayed competent in the conference final series as they beat the Spurs by a small margin, making it 3-1 Spurs in the series. It was exciting to see Horry and Ginobili hitting crucial shots from downtown closing Suns' lead in the last minutes, but Nash and the gang made quite a show to hang in. Excited to see the next game, but is it going to be broadcasted in Japan?? By the way, it seems like the most popular sport in Philippines is basketball. They even have a professional league. Wow!

タイトル：ジェネサン最後の夜

教会ではミサが、仕事に就く警備員、ナッシュがまたチームを救った！

ジェネラルサントスの後片づけに入った。放送用の機材を撤収。後に何も残ってないか確かめながら。
きょうは街を歩く時間があった。たくさんの人と交通が行き来する地方都市だ。予想通り、キリスト教色で充ちていた。周辺の山地はイスラム教の抵抗勢力で支配されているにもかかわらずだ。
可愛いフィリピン人も周辺で歩いていた。（すごい化粧が濃かったけど…そして勿論…魅力的な大和撫子にはかないませんが！）食べ物も美味しかった。（特にレストランで食べた照り焼き風味のチキンは日本人好みで美味かった）
も う少し冒険に出たかったけど、たくさんの人さらいやテロリストと見られるのがうろうろしているから、あまり歩き回るなと警察も警告してたので、街の中心 部をうろちょろする程度にした。とりあえずサントス将軍は見つけたけど！将軍は畑を耕して作物を作るために移民を連れてきて街を作った人物だと言われてい る。
ここに戻ってくることがあるかどうかは分からないが、（たぶん無いと思うけど！）次来るときまでには街がもっと平和で裕福になっていることを祈ります。色々ありがとう！

追伸
夜 のフリータイムにＳＡスパーズとフェニックス・サンズの試合を観た。サンズが小差でスパーズを下してコンフェレンス決勝シリーズの成績をスパーズの３対 １として、シリーズで闘い続ける権利をキープした。オーリーやジノービリーが重要なスリーポイントを最後の方に決めて、サンズのリードを縮めてきて、盛り 上がったが、ナッシュとその仲間たちが盛り上げて何とか逃げきった。次の試合を観るのが楽しみだが、日本で放送されるんだろうか？？ところで、フィリピン で最も盛んなスポーツはバスケらしい。プロのリーグもあるんだって。すごいね！

What can we learn from all the confusion?

is this a media circus? at JE's press briefing

Slept for several hours in a row for the first time after arriving in GenSan. In the morning, the JE officially announced its retreat from the city, back to Manila. The media were to be left in the city wondering what this was all about...
In cities like Davao, the largest city in Mindanao, and the second largest of the nation, Japanese descendants are not a rarity, as many Japanese refugees have arrived in this island before the war. And it happens that there are many in GenSan as well.
Of course, it's big news if a living ex-soldier appears in front of us, but there were many such stories around this area before this time. Where did everything go wrong?
We will try to find answers to this questions for years, and for me, all this confusion was quite a worthwhile experience for my career. After giving out a live report in the late night news, I was thinking of the coverages we, the media have given out... Why were all the media crazy this time? (At least, the Filipinos thought the Japanese were crazy!)
Maybe the timing was the key. It's the 60th anniversary of the ending of WW2. The JE moving quickly and without hesitation had lit the flame on the media. But maybe the JE just wanted to take a look. As the number of media grows, the flame becomes a big fire... That's how we build up a media circus...
I think we can learn from all of this. Well, actually, we must!

タイトル：この騒動から何が学び取れるだろうか？

ジェネサンに来て、初めて数時間連続で寝た。朝には、日本大使館が正式に街から撤退してマニラに戻ることを発表した。メディアは街に取り残された。これは一体何だったんだろうって思いながら…。
ミンダナオの最大の都市で、この国で二つ目に大きなダバオのような街で日系人がいるのは珍しくないことだ。戦前にこの島に多くの移民が入っていたからだ。そしてそれはジェネサンでも同じことだった。
もちろん、目の前に生きた元兵士が出てくればそれはビッグニュースだ。でもここら辺では同じような話がごろごろあった。どこですべてが狂ったのだろうか？
こ の疑問については何年も答えを探し続けるだろう。そして俺にとっては今回の騒動は、仕事のためにかなり価値のある経験になった。夜のニュース用に生リ ポートを出した後、これまでメディアが出してきたことについて考えた…。なぜメディアはここまで狂ったように出してきたのだろうか。（少なくともフィリピ ンの人たちは日本人は狂ってると思っただろうね！）
ひょっとしたらタイミングの問題だったのかも知れない。第二次世界大戦が終わって６０周年にな る。日本大使館が素早く、躊躇せずに動いたことでメディアに 火が点いた。でも日本大使館はちょっと見に来ようという程度だったのかも知れない。そしてメディアの数が増えるにつれてさらにその炎が大火に変わっていっ た…。こうやってメディアサーカスが生まれるんだ…。
これから学ぶことができると思う。いや、本当のところ、学ばねばならないんだ！

2nd day in GenSan

As there were no new info about the ex-soldier in the morning, we were quite sure that the so-called mediator's stories are doubtful.
The problem was there were no way of rejecting the story completely, but as we asked the guerillas and police authorities of the area, there were no sign of ex-soldiers remaining in the mountaineous regions of Mindanao.
Late at night, the briefing of the JE told the media it was almost over. There probably are no ex-soldiers and the mediator's info were doubtful.
So now what shall we do??

午前中、元兵士についての情報が全く無かっただけに、仲介役と言われている男の話は怪しいことがほぼ明らかになってきた。
ただ問題は話を完全に否定する方法がないことだ。しかし周辺のゲリラや警察当局に聞いても、ミンダナオの山間部に元兵士が残っているという手がかりさえない。
夜遅くになって行われた日本大使館のフリーフィングでは、もうほぼ終わりだということが報道陣に伝えられた。たぶん元兵士なんていなくて、仲介者の情報は怪しいのだろう。さて、これからどうしましょうか？

At least Deep Impact's victory was not doubtful at all, as I watched its astonishing victory on NHK World News after the live evening report by my colleague. My favorite Admire Fuji seemed to have finished fourth. I lost the bet, but not bad. Not bad!

少なくともディープインパクトの勝利は疑いの余地も無さそうだ。同僚が夕方にリポートを生で出した後、ＮＨＫワールドのニュースでその圧勝ぶりを見た。贔屓のアドマイヤフジは４着に終わったようだ。賭けには負けたけど、上出来だよ。上出来！

Left Manila first thing in the morning and flew into General Santos City.
We started gathering information just before noon, as I was told to give out a live report in the evening news. Sadly there was nothing new that would lead to anything concerning the alleged 2 ex-soldiers' existence.
At least it was now clear that the information that the JE depended on, was coming out fromn only one source. This so-called "mediator" man did not contact the embassy giving the precise time they could meet the ex-soldiers. Hmm... is there something fishy here??

After giving out our live report, we had some meal at the hotel, which was pretty good by the way, and started to work on the live report I must give out on Sunday morning... sleepy...

朝一番にマニラを離れてジェネラルサントス市に空路で入った。
正 午前には取材を始めた。夕方のニュースには生リポートをしなければならなかったので。悲しいことに生存しているとされた２人の元兵士につながる新情報は無 かった。少なくとも日本大使館が頼みにしている情報減は一つしかないことは明らかになった。仲介役と言われている男から大使館に元兵士と面会できる具体的 な時間についての連絡は無かった。
うーん…なんか怪しくないッスか？？

生リポートを出した後、ホテルでメシを食べた。ちなみに結構美味かったです。そして日曜の朝に出さないといけない生リポートの準備を始めた…。ねむ…。

Today I was supposed to go home after having drinks at a farewell party, and go home thinking about the most important race of them all! But as I went to my office, I was told to go to the Mindanao Island of the Philippines as there were news of a ex-Japanese army soldier may have been found in the area.
The news is very exciting... if it's true of course... so I have to say that I have no regrets not being able to watch the race! I asked my collegue to get me a 5=6 quinella ticket... Won't be able to see Deep Impact(No. 5) capture its second crown, but wish good luck to my charming Admire Fuji(No. 6)!

マニラからこんにちわ。そう、フィリピンのメトロ・マニラだい！きょうは送別会で飲んだ後、家に帰って一番大切なレースについて考えるはずだった！でも職場に行くと、旧日本兵が見つかったかも知れないというニュースが入り、フィリピンのミンダナオ島に行くよう言われた。ニュースはすごいエキサイティング…これが本当ならだけど…だからレースを見られないことに悔いはないというしかない！同僚に５＝６の馬連をゲットするようにお願いした…ディープインパクト（５番）が二冠をゲットすることは見られない。でもとにかく大好きなアドマイヤフジ（６番）のグッドラックを祈っておきます。では、マニラからお休み！

So it's rather obvious we must check out the SS seniors. Checking out the broodmare sires of the 12 horses securing the top three positions, 3 (Caro, 2 Tony Bin) come from the Grey Sovereign=Nasrullah line. Another 3 (Royal Ski, What Luck, Well Decorated) come from the Bold Ruler=Nasrullah line. 2 (Maruzenski, Nijinsky) come from the Nijinsky=Northern Dancer line. Others (Kris, Mining) are the Native Dancer line, and (Law Society) Ribot line. Though the Nasrullah line seems to be the majority, there are no horses in that line this year, except Dance in the More, a grandson of SS and its broodmare the Never Bend=Nasrullah line. Many this year is the Northern Dancer line, as Deep Impact and Peer Gynt are both from Lyphard=Northern Dancer line and Sixth Sense with the Danzig=Northern Dancer line, and Admire Japan from the Nijinsky=Northern Dancer line. Dantsu Kitcho's broodmare sire is from the Partholon=Tourbillon line, Rosenkreuz' and Brave Heart's from the Mill Reef line, which are minor lines for this particular race. Considering the pedigree, I think there are chances for grandsons of SS like Admire Vega, Inti Raimi, Silk Trooper as their broodmare sires come from the Northern Dancer line. How about the others? Kongo Rikishi O's father is from the Nureyev=Northen Dancer line, and Nishino Dokomademo and Shadow Gate from the Dancing Brave=Lyphard=Northern Dancer line. Silk Nexus' dad Grass Wonder is the Hail to Reason line like SS and Brian's Time and 2002 2nd place Symboli Kris S.'s father Kris S.
Meiner Recolte's Chief Bearhart is the grandson of Danzig, and Cosmo Austin's Oath the line of Fairy King=Northern Dancer. Fusaichi Concorde in 1996 was a rare Northern Dancer line winner. And with Eishin Niizan's Forty Niner which is the Mr. Prospector=Native Dancer line, giving birth to last year's absolute winner, Kingkamehameha and its father Kingmambo from the same line, also with 1998 2nd place Bold Emperor's father King Glorious. Both are rare types in this race and need real power to come into the top positions.
So the conclusion... No doubt Deep Impact and Peer gynt would make it along with Sixth Sense and Admire Japan. I see some appeal in Dance in the More, Admire Fuji and Inti Raimi as they are the grandsons of SS which is starting to appeal with That's the Plenty coming in third two years ago. In these horses, Admire Fuji having Tony Bin's blood in his father, and Inti Raimi with Maruzenski's blood may be helpful.

Seeing these data, you can see 10 out of 14 winners come straight from the Satsuki Sho. 5 have become double crown winners. Looking at the 1st and 2nd horses, 16 out of 28 have become 6th place or better in the Satsuki Sho. (three horses that raced in the Satsuki Sho two races before are '92 Rice Shower in 8th place, '02 Tanino Gimlet in 3rd place, '04 Heart's Cry in 14th place)
When a double crown winner takes birth, the runners-up are, three that were Aoba Sho winners, one Kyoto Shimbun Cup winner and a 8th place NHK Cup runner and a later Kikka Sho and Emperor's Cup winner Rice Shower. Last year's irregular double crown winner's runner up was the Kyoto Shimbun Cup winner Heart's Cry.
If Deep Impact will win as expected, horses coming from other routes like the Aoba Sho winner Dantsu Kitcho and Kyoto Shimbun Cup winner Inti Raimi may take a apart of the show.
Including horses that could take the "place" position, you see some participation from the Principal Stakes, but not many changes. But if you limit it to the recent 5 years, two horses that competed in the NHK Mile Cup were victorious, and in third place horses that did bad in Satsuki Sho are in (including Heart's Cry). Peer Gynt, 6th in Satsuki Sho and 4th in the NHK Mile Cup is attractive and also the 8th and 9th place horses Dance In the More and Rosenkreuz should be getting marks.

こ れを見ると、勝馬１４頭中１０頭が皐月賞から直接のステップ。５頭が２冠目を獲った。連帯馬で見ても、２８頭中１６頭！連帯圏で来る前走皐月賞の馬は６ 着以上まで。（前々走が皐月賞は３頭：９２年ライスシャワーは８着、０２年タニノギムレットは３着、０４年ハーツクライは１４着）
２冠が生まれた年の２着馬は青葉賞１着馬３頭、京都新聞杯１着馬１頭、そして後に菊花賞と天皇賞を勝つライスシャワーのＮＨＫ杯８着が１頭。去年の変則２冠馬の２着馬も京都新聞杯１着馬のハーツクライ。
ディープインパクトが期待通り勝つなら、別路線の青葉賞馬ダンツキッチョウと京都新聞杯インティライミも怪しいか。
３ 着馬まで見ても、プリンシパルＳが入ってくるぐらいで、あまり傾向に変わりはない。ただ、この５年間に絞るとＮＨＫマイルＣを走った２頭が勝っているの と、３着以内に皐月賞で惨敗した馬（ハーツクライも含めて）が入り込んでいる。皐月賞６着～ＮＨＫマイルＣ４着のペールギュントなんかも面白いし、皐月賞 ８着９着だったダンスインザモアとローゼンクロイツも注意が必要だ。

Tuesday, I was thinking about the past... the unforgettable Derby horses...

Tokai Teio was the winner of the first Nippon Derby I saw live as I returned to Japan the year before. In my freshman year in college, I saw the race on TV at Kyoto. The son of a triple crown winner Symboli Rudolf captured his second crown in the 58th Derby in 1991 remaining undefeated just like its father seven years before.

Mihono Bourbon was another double crown winner without a loss, but almost all of the victories were won taking the lead in the race being the front runner. Captured the 59th Derby without letting no horse go in front all through the race. The only loss was when a different horse ran in front, in his challenge for the third crown, Kikka Sho, which eventually became its last race due to a bowed tendon in its leg.

Sunny Brian, also a front runner, won his second crown at the 64th Derby, one of the fewest Nippon Derbys I couldn't watch, as a killing of a handicapped sixth grader boy was killed in Suma Ward of Kobe City on Tuesday of that week, forcing me to run around the scene of the murder. We called the homicide, the "Jun-kun Incident", and on the day of the Derby, I was looking for any evidence that would lead to the suspect of the killing of the innocent boy. Becoming another double crown colt, Sunny Brian had already done me a favor in his first crown race, the Satsuki Sho which payed over 50 thousand yen per 100 yen quinella ticket, which I had a 1000 yen worth. Tanino Gimlet won from behind at the 69th Derby in 2002, the first ever race I watched from the special seat in the stands. It was outrageous to see the long sharp run the colt had shown from above... I felt shivers down my spine... as Gimilet came from way behind and ripped out in front to capture the victory. My ideal horse that's always a good last spurt runner.

タイトル：記憶に残るダービー

火曜日は昔のことを考えてた…忘れられないダービー馬たちのことを…

トウカイテイオーはその前の年に日本に帰ってきたばかりだった俺が初めて生で見た日本ダービーを勝った馬だ。大学１回の時で、京都のテレビでレースを見た。３冠馬シンボリルドルフの息子が負け知らずで平成３年の第５８回ダービーを勝った。７年前に父が勝ったように。

ミホノブルボンも無敗の２冠馬だが、ほとんどの勝利は逃げ馬になってレースの主導権を握って勝ち取った。レース中どの馬も前に行かせることなく第５９回 ダービーを奪い取った。唯一の勝利は別の馬が先行したときだった。菊花賞で３冠に挑戦したときだ。結局、屈健炎のためにこのレースが最後となった。

サニーブライアンも逃げ馬で、第６４回ダービーで２冠目を獲った。見ることが出来なかった数少ない日本ダービーだった。その週の火曜日に障害がある小学６ 年生の子どもが殺されて、事件現場を走り回っていたからだ。その殺人事件のことを「淳君事件」と呼んでいたが、ダービーの当日も何の罪もない男の子を殺し た犯人につながる話を見つける手がかりがないか探し回っていた。サニーブライアンはすでに１冠目の皐月賞でお引き立てを頂いていた。馬連の５万馬券が出た が、千円持ってたんだよね。ありがとうサニブー！

タニノギムレットは平成１４年の第６９回ダービーを後ろから差し切って勝った。スタンド内の特別席で初めて見たレースだっ た。上から見たこの若駒が繰り出す長く、切れ味が鋭い走りはすごかった…背筋がゾッとした…ギムレットがかなり後ろから前に飛び出して勝ったときは。いつ も追い込んでくる理想の馬だった。

　memory（記憶）memories（複数形・思い出）で日本語の唄などでも
　よく出てくる単語。そこに残るという意味でmemorable.
　そのあとにunforgettableとあるが、これも同じような意味。
　こっちはmemorableより使いやすいのは「悪い意味で忘れられない」
　という場合。衝撃的だったと言うことで良い意味で忘れられないと
　使っても良いと思いだろうと思い、ここではunforgettableとした。

Start of a special week!

The elite horse that probably will still be undefeated next Sunday... and the horse that barely qualified for the decisive bout... I just have unreasoning love for this colt that can't be an honor roll student...

As I went once again to Makuhari, my mind was taken away to the special weekend coming up. Yes, it's the Derby week in Japan and we all must concentrate on what will happen to the most distinguished race of the year!
For almost everybody's mind, the champion chosen from 8966 horses is the undefeated Satsuki Sho winner Deep Impact. OK. I agree. There probably won't be any revolution this Sunday.
But just agreeing to an uncontendable victory is not why feel special about this week. There must be another miraculous story waiting for us that would lead to a dramatic quinella or a trifecta ticket!
I'll stick to my original dream of seeing a shuddering last spurt of Admire Fuji, coming sharply from behind like always. I love horses that come from behind, and it's real ecstasy to see your horse cutting through a bunch of horses. As Fuji was always too late to finish in front of all horses except twice, he's the 18th horse to qualify for this decisive race, and only 18 horses can run! Funny guy, right?
Looking forward to hearing which horses my friends and collegues will cheer for!

タイトル：特別な週の始まり！

写真：このエリートな馬はたぶん次の日曜もたぶん無敗のままでしょう…。そして辛うじて大一番の出場権を得た馬…。どうもこの優等生になりきれない牡馬を溺愛してしまうんだな…。

幕張にもう一度行ったが、次の特別な週末のことで頭が一杯。そう、日本ではダービーウィークだ。とにかくみんなこの一年で最も有名なレースがどうなるのか集中しなければならないのだ！
ほとんどの人の頭の中では、８９６６頭の頂点に立つのは無敗の皐月賞馬ディープインパクトと考えてるだろう。まぁ、同意しますよ。たぶん日曜に革命が起きることはないだろうよ。
でも誰も逆らえないような勝利に同意するためにこの週を特別扱いするわけじゃない。絶対何か奇跡的なことが俺たちを待ち受けているはずなんだな。ドラマチックな馬連、三連単の馬券につながることが！
俺は初志を貫いて身がよだつような追い込みをアドマイヤフジが見せる夢を見ることにしよう。いつも後ろから切れ味鋭く切れ込むようにと。後方から追い込ん でくる馬がとにかく好きだ。馬群に切り込んで行く馬を見るのは本当に快感だ。フジはいつもそれが遅すぎて、２回を除いていつも一番に前に出られない。その ためにこの大一番には１８番目に出場権を得た。１８頭しか走れないのに！おもろいやっちゃろ？
あとダチや同僚からどの馬を応援するか聴くのが楽しみやね！

Getting some academic air!

The Nippon Convention Center (Makuhari Messe); attending academic meetings to flush your brain; In the afternoon, there was a crowd of...; After drinking for a couple of hours... where the hell was I?

Why not spend my precious Sunday in an academic melting pot of geniuses. As a reporter covering disasters, it's one of my duties to write about scientific findings once in a while, so I attended the Joint Meeting for Earth and Planetary Science... (http://www.epsu.jp/jmoo2005/index_e.html) My brain was really screwed up today as I woke up before seven and took the train to Makuhari area of Chiba City. It's amazing I was awake all day!
It was the first time ever for me to come to the Nippon Convention Center (http://www.m-messe.co.jp/index_e.html).
There were different crowds around the area today, as the Chiba Lotte Marines seemed to have crushed the Chunichi Dragons in a baseball game at the nearby Chiba Marine Stadium. And there were a bunch of girls... ah, well, I'll try to call them "girls"...gathered for a Korean actor? singer? ah whatever... giving out a concert or something at some other place.
Anyways, had enough of scienitific and technological speeches for a year, but the convention will be held for another four days! Oh, please check it out if you care... No thanks? Well... that's why we try to find stories for the public and fight to translate their cosmic jargons. I think I tried my best to do so!

タイトル：少し学術的な空気を吸って！

貴重な日曜日にアカデミックな天才たちのるつぼに顔を出すのも手ですねぇ。災害を担当する記者としてたまに科学的な発見について書くのは一つの責務なんで すねぇ。ということで、地球惑星科学関連学会の合同大会に参加してきました…（大会の英語ＵＲＬ）。朝の７時前に起きて千葉の幕張まで電車で駆けつけただ けに、頭の中はぐちゃぐちゃ。一日中起きてたことが不思議だ！
日本コンベンションセンター（ＮＣＣの英語ＵＲＬ）に来るのは初めてだった。
今日は色んな集団が来てた。すぐ近くの千葉マリンスタジアムで千葉ロッテマリーンズが中日ドラゴンズに圧勝していたようだし、たくさんの女の子…いや、 まぁ、「女の子」ということにしときますか…が韓国の俳優？歌手？まー誰でもいいや…のコンサートか何かのために別の会場で集まっていた。
とにかく一年分の科学・工学の講演を聴きましたよ。でも大会はあと４日もあるんだよね！まぁ、興味があるならぜひのぞいてください。え、遠慮しとく？そうやね…そのために俺たちが一般の人たちのために宇宙語を何とか訳して伝えようとするんだよなぁ。そうできるように最大限がんばったつもりです！

コンベンションセンターのロビーでは、唯一あるテレビがフジテレビが映っていた…いうまでもなく…映ってたのはこれ！

写真：オークスで圧倒的な人気のシーザリオが２番人気のエアメサイアと３番人気のディアデラノビアをおさえた。馬番連勝は６点３倍しか付かず、千円分しか持ってなかった…レースでは一万五千円買ってたんすけど。仕事に集中しとけばよかった…。うん…。

A national sport on the edge

Asashoryu pushes out Chiyotaikai winning his fourth straight trophy

As I was working in my office, the TV, as always was showing the live broadcast of Sumo wrestling for hours. This national sport used to be one of the killer contents. For many times, it had numbers over the 30% line when I was much younger, and now the numbers oftenly hit the under 10% mark...
When I was in college I used to check out the crucial matches, as I was used to watch this sport with my grandpa when I lived with my grandparents just before entering college. At then, it was the reigning days of the ultimate grand champion, "the Wolf" Chiyonofuji was about to end, and a conversion of generations was starting. Eventually Takanohana (at then Takahanada) another legendary grand champion the same age as I am, and the first ever champion as a foreigner, Akebono took over. It was so exciting to see the two generations clash in the latter half of the tournaments.
There were many wrestlers playing the supporting role, as the small cunning fellows like Kyokudouzan, Mainoumi and Tomonohana fighting the big obese Hawaiian Konishiki, and wrestlers like Kotonishiki, Akinoshima and the "Salt Shaker" Mitoizumi always showing spirit fighting the top wrestlers. Some like the popular and handsome Terao and Kirishima tried to reach the top, but always fall short of the mark. (Kirishima had won the trophy only once in his lifetime)
All these various characters had supported the "show" part of this national sport, but nowadays I can't see this kind of taste. Well maybe I'm too busy to watch the fight. But mostly, there aren't many guys of the same generations who'd talk about Sumo.
Today, the Mongolian grand champion Asashoryu, the absolute ruler of the sport now, won his 14th straight match in the tournament winning the champion trophy for his fourth straight and 12th lifetime. No challengers can be foreseen and we'll all have to wait for a while for an alternation of generations. Meanwhile the numbers watching the sport is diminishing. It's good that we have an absolute champion, but without a stronger rival, it won't help at all...
I want to see Sumo like the exciting matches of decades ago, just like when we all sat in front of the television wanting to watch the daring wrestler fighting off the grand champion!

タイトル：崖っぷちの国技

仕事場で働いていたら、テレビはいつも通り何時間も相撲中継が流れていた。昔、この国技はキラーコンテンツの一つだった。俺がもっと若かったころには、何度も３０％以上の視聴率を取っていたが、今はよく１０％未満の数字を取るようになった…。
大学生だったときには重要な試合は見るようにしていたぐらいだ。大学の入学前に祖父母宅で暮らしてたときによくじいちゃんと一緒に見てたから。その頃は君 臨していた究極の横綱、「ウルフ」千代の富士の時代を終わりそうなころで、世代の移行が始まろうとしていた。最終的には俺と同じ年のもう一人の伝説的な横 綱、貴乃花（当時は貴花田）と初めての外国人出身の横綱の曙が天下を取るようになる。この２つの世代が場所の後半で激突するときはすごく盛り上がった。
脇役もたくさんいた。小さい業師の旭道山や舞の海、それに智の花がでっかく太ったハワイアンの小錦とぶち当たったり、琴錦や安芸乃島、それに「ソルト シェーカー」水戸泉が上位と当たるときに奮闘したり。イケメンで人気があった寺尾や霧島も結局一番上にあと一歩で届かない。（霧島は一回だけ賜杯を勝ち 取っている）
こういうバラエティに富む力士が国技の魅せどころを支えていたが、最近はこういう趣があまり感じられない。まぁひょっとしたら俺があまり見ている時間が無いだけなのかも知れないが、一番大きいのは同年代で相撲の話をするのがいないことか。
きょう、圧倒的な支配者のモンゴル人横綱、朝青龍が今場所１４連勝を飾り、４場所連続、１２個目の賜杯を手にした。挑戦者は見あたらないし、世代交代には まだまだ時間がかかりそうだ。その間に相撲を見る人は減る一方だ。圧倒的なチャンピオンがいることは良いことだけど、強いライバルがいないと何にもならな い…。
１０年、２０年前のような盛り上がるような相撲を見てみたい。みんなでテレビの前に座って横綱に果敢に立ち向かう力士を見ていたころのように！

back to the zoo!

After Asahi Shimbun wrote this article in yesterday's morning paper, the media and webloggers filled their pages with this guy!

The Japanese just love to watch animals, especially ones that perform or act in a strange way. Honestly, we can get better numbers with news topics showing irresistibly cute animals, especially mammals.
A couple of years ago, on the stage was Tamachan, a seal which lost its way into the Tamagawa River where thousands rushed to the riverbed to take just one look of this innocent fellow. Recently, it was the whale that wandered into the Tokyo Bay, but unfortunately lost its life on the way back to the sea.
Many of these performers were found outside of parks, but the red panda (lesser panda http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/wildfacts/factfiles/6.shtml) taking the floor this time is a zoo member. (http://www.city.chiba.jp/zoo/) The crowd is finally back to the zoo to see animals!
There's so many zoological gardens in Japan, the big ones like Ueno Park Zoo in Tokyo and Tennoji Zoo in Osaka are basics, but the smaller ones that take root in the community are catalysts of the community. Animals have powers to heal our wounded souls coming from all the stress. They also teach the children what it means to live and die. Unfortunately I can't find one near my residential area, as I barely see animals in everyday life.
Just like my relatives and friends, I wish I could someday have a dog or a cat for keeps. What mom? Before that find a girl right? I know, I know...

タイトル：動物園に戻ってきた！

写真：朝日新聞が昨日の朝刊でこの記事を書いた後、メディアやブログはこの子で埋め尽くされた！

日本人はとにかく動物を見るのが好きだ。特にパフォーマンスをしたり、変な行動を取るのが。正直、とんでもなく可愛すぎる動物、特にほ乳類を見せるニュー ストピックを取り上げると数字が上がる。数年前は、タマちゃんが話題の中心だった。多摩川に迷い込んだこのアザラシを一目見ようと何千人も人たちが河川敷 に殺到した。最近は、東京湾に迷い込んだクジラだったが、可哀想なことに海に帰る前に命を落とした。
こうしたパフォーマーたちの多くは公園の外で見つかったものだが、今回のレッサーパンダ（レッドパンダ・参考になるＢＢＣのページ）は動物園のメンバーだ。（千葉市動物公園のページ）観衆が動物を見るためにようやく動物園に戻った！
日本にはたくさんの動物公園ががあって、東京の上野公園動物園や大阪の天王寺動物公園のようにでっかいとこは基本だけど、地域に根付いている小さいのがコミュニティーの触媒になっている。動物はストレスで痛んだ心を癒してくれる。さらに子どもには生きることと死ぬことの意味を教えてくれる。残念ながら自分の居住エリアには無い。日常生活で動物を見ることはほとんどない。
親戚や友達のように、いつか犬か猫を飼えたらいいな。え、何？おかん。それより先に彼女を探せって？はいはい分かってるって…。

OK, to be honest, as a kid I did love Star Wars. But as I've grown up, the enthusiasm has passed away. I checked Episode I of the latter (or is it the former...) series not at the movies, but with DVD, and I haven't even seen the second episode yet. Where did my spirits go!? Many critics surrounding me had whispered the failure with Episode I and even more with Episode II. But many are saying George Lucas has earned back his reputation with the new film. I'll ask myself if I'm ready to get enthusiastic again and go out to see this one when it'll premiere in July 9th in this country. Oh yeah, before that I have to watch Episode II!

Another topic about films. Movies picking the JSDF as the main element of the film is earning some respects. A new film will be out in the summer with the JMSDF naval ship, Aegis in the spotlight. (http://www.herald.co.jp/official/aegis/index.shtml) There were news that in a preview at Cannes, the film was very well recieved. I don't know much about the film which held a promotion event today at Roppongi (http://www.sengoku1549.com/pc/), but the JSDF is winning support steadily by cooperating with the film industry. Let's see how they'll do in the real world!

そう、正直に言うと、ガキのころはスターウォーズは大好きだった。でも大人になっていくと、その熱意もどっかに行ってしまった。後のシリーズ（いや、前のか…）のエピソードⅠは映画館でなく、ＤＶＤで見た。それで２番目のエピソードなんて未だに見てない。昔の熱意はどこへ行っちゃったんだろうね！？自分の周りの評論家たちはエピソードⅠ、そしてそれ以上にエピソードⅡについて、その駄作ぶりを耳もとに囁いてきた。でも今回の新作については多くの人がジョージ・ルーカスが名声を取り返したと言っている。
自分にもう一度あの熱狂を取り戻して、この国で７月９日から上映開始されるときに見に行くつもりがあるか自分に問いかけてみよう。その前にエピソードⅡを見なきゃね！

映画について話題をもう一つ。自衛隊を中心的な要素に据えた映画が評判になっているようだ。この夏に上映される予定の新作で、海上自衛隊の護衛艦イージス にスポットライトを当てた。カンヌで行われた試写会で、この作品の評判が良かったという報道もあった。きょう六本木でプロモーションをやった作品について はよく分からないが、フィルム業界に協力することで自衛隊は着実に支持者を増やしてきている。現実の世界でどこまでやれるのか見ていこう！

Too much alcohol this night, as I was MAD like a fighting bull and also SAD like a lone puppy, knowing I'm being a little childish... But I have things I can stand and I don't hide my feelings when I think I should show them.
That's when my colleagues who are also my best friends help me, as I can give myself away in front of them. They've listened to all my grumbles and we were off again, talking about work, talking about girls, talking about our bright future!
OK, I'm all fixed up now, and ready to walk the severe road once again. Yes, the road of success in life. Let's kick some ass!

今夜も飲みすぎた。闘牛のように激しく怒りがこみ上げたのと同時に、独りぼっちの子犬のようにもの悲しかった。少し子供っぽい態度を取ってることも分かりながら…。でも俺にだって許せないことはあるし、見せるべきだと思うときは、気持ちは隠さない。
そういうとき同僚であり、親友である奴らが俺を救ってくれる。奴らの前なら本音が言える。俺の愚痴はすっかり聞いてくれたし、結局いつもの話題に。仕事のこと、女のこと、そして俺たちの輝ける将来のこと！
よし、俺はもうすっきりしたし、今一度、険しい道を歩んでいく覚悟はできた。そう、人生の成功に向けた道を。やったろうやないけ！

grumble　愚痴
　何となくぶつぶつ言う愚痴がgrumbleで
　英語でそう書いちゃったが、
　辞書を引いてみると色々あるんですね。
　マジで文句を言うのはcomplaintという気がするが、
　口語、つまりslangでいいんならmoanってのも出てきた。
　さらにwhineやgripeも。あー、愚痴ってこれの全部だー！！

tags on sashimi... very kind to tell me what I'm eating! the race was on with which sake I should drink, the favorite was one in a green bracket, but we drunk the underdogs! back in Shinjuku the windows of high buildings were bright though it was about to cross the midnight border!

Drinking with an assistant professor of Tokyo University, an old acquaintance since starting my carrer as a reporter covering disasters, fish and Japanese sake was the theme.
It was the first time I saw tags on raw fish and a list of Japanese sake on a grid just like horse racing journals marking the favorites. Once in a while it's joyful to gulp down alcohol talking professionaly about what we've achieved over the years. It's just a matter of giving each other away confessing our real intentions. It's so rare to speak that way in a world of tricks and diplomacy. Without trust we just talk of what many will nod their heads and avoid controversies. I'm lucky I can spit out all the hardships with comrades.
But maybe that's the only way we journalists can walk our way through life... not mentioning the support of families...

タイトル：楽しいなぁ！

写真：刺身に札…何を食べてるのか教えてくれるなんて親切だなぁ！　どのお酒を飲むかレースが始まっていた、人気は緑色の枠に入っている酒だったが、人気がないのを飲んじゃった！　新宿に戻ってみると、高層ビルの窓にはまだ明かりが、日付が変わろうとしてるのに！

災害記者としてキャリアを始めたころからの古い知り合いの東京大学助教授と魚と日本酒をテーマに飲んでいた。
刺身に札が付いているのを見たのは初めてだし、競馬新聞のように人気に印が付いている日本酒の出走表を見るのも初めて。時にはここ数年で達成したことについて専門的な議論を交わすことは楽しくて仕方がない。これは単にお互いのことをさらけ出せるかどうかにかかっている。騙し合いと交渉術の世界でそれは稀有なことなんだけど。本音で話せないときはとにかく誰もが頷いて争いを避けるような当たり障りのない話しかしない。辛いことも含めてさらけ出すことができる自分は幸せだ。
でもそれが俺たち記者にとって人生を歩んでいく唯一の方法なのかも知れない…家族の支えについて考えないのであればだが…。

　そのあとのspit out...も同義。
　spitは唾を吐き出すときに、日常的に使う単語だが、
　本音を「吐き出す」という意味でも使う。

　人生の価値は決まると思っているのは俺だけだろうか…。

Where and how will peace find its way?

It was a peaceful day in Japan with news of a firm executive paying 3.6 billion yen in taxes this year was the top item in news shows...
But still there were many stories of killing abroad, as thousands were told massacred by clashes in Uzbekistan. More have been killed already in Iraq as there were news today more were shot and slain because of power struggles. Though the numbers were not as high, the saddest was the news about more than dozens being killed in Afghanistan was because of a misleading article by NEWSWEEK. Though they have given out apologies for this, it was crucial enough to lose all the efforts of calling for peace in the Islamic World. Yes, I bet the Americans have things to confess concerning some scoundrels' hatred with the Islams, but with a delicate issue like this, making mistakes will turn all Americans into villains...
We still have an endless cycle of hatred in Asia too. As evil invaders, Japanese must bear our cross till one day the kindred spirits of Asia will forgive us. If we think of what we can achieve in a peaceful world, how sacrificing will that be?
Well we know love and hate started when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit of the knowledge of good and evil, but is there anyway to find some kind of heaven on earth? We shall seek...

タイトル：どこに行けば、どうすれば平和を導き出せるのだろうか？

日本では平和な一日だった。報道番組のトップ項目はある会社の幹部が今年３６億円の税金を払ったというニュースだった…。
でも相変わらず海外では人が殺されるニュースがたくさんあった。ウズベキスタンでは暴動で千人単位の人たちが虐殺された話。イラクではすでにたくさんに人 が殺されているが、ニュースによるときょうも勢力の争いのためにさらにたくさんの人が撃たれたり、刃物で殺害されたりしていた。数字は大きくなかったもの の、最も悲しかったのは、ニューズウィークの誤報記事のせいで、１０数人の人たちがアフガンで殺されていたという報道だ。（ＵＲＬ）
これについて彼らは謝罪文を出したみたいだが、イスラム世界で平和を呼びかけるすべての努力を失わせるほど深刻なことだ。そう、きっとアメリカ人は一部の不届きものが持つイスラムへの憎しみについて白状しなければならないものはあると思うが、このような敏感な問題について間違いを起こすと、すべてのアメリカ人を悪党に変えてしまうことになりえよう…。
アジアでもこの終わりのない憎しみの悪循環が残っている。日本人はいつかアジアの同志たちが許してくれるまで悪の侵略者としての十字架を背負っていくしかない。平和の世界で享受できることを考えれば、それがいかほどの犠牲だろうか？
まぁ、我々はアダムとイブが善悪を知る禁断の果物を食べたときから愛と憎しみが始まったことは分かっているが、この地球上に天国のようなところを見つける方法はないのだろうか？探し続けるしか…。

　その直後のvillainも同義。アメリカ人が「いいもん」と
　堂々と言っちゃう奴はあまりいないだろうけど、
　彼らの中には「いいもん」もいる。そういう人たちが
　霞んでしまうほど、アメリカ人をscoundrel視することが
　世界で受け入れられている。そういうことを伝える報道も
　不思議じゃなくなっただけに単純な誤報も生まれるのだろう。
　これほどアメリカ人が嫌われた時代があっただろうか…。

Learning Hello in Korean!

I think I've mastered English and Japanese enough to call myself a native speaker in these two languages. So it was always my ambition to master more. I've come close with le francais. Je peux parler un peu de cette langue, (I can speak a little of this language) as I've studied it for six years as a second language (actually the third language) in junior high and high school. But I have a hard time listening to interviews of the French like the former coach of the Japanese National Soccer team, Philippe Troussier. It's quite impossible for me to master a language I've no way of practicing it in my everyday life and is it wiser to keep on fighting with French?
I didn't think so when I went to college and I chose German and Russian (which was "weird" as students usually pick English in one of the two required courses). In both of the languages I was perplexed with the "cases". Having masculine and feminine in words wasn't that amazing as that's the same with French (though German has the neutral case), but the nominative, genitive, dative, accusative cases were new and melancholic discoveries for an English native. (in Russian they even have instrumental and prepositional cases!)
Hangul was even more "sensational". I'd like to understand a bit of this language especially with all the interactions with the South and North Koreans becoming a necessity in Japanese society. I believe Chinese can wait for a couple of years, so it's timely to learn Hangul right now. But the letters are giving me headaches. The Russian alphabet was much simpler!
It's funny that I have advantages of learning these foreign languages, as it's much better to learn Korean (or Chinese) through Japanese, and German (or French or Spanish) through English. I can't find a German lesson in English, but I'm watching the televised lesson thinking "this would be taught in English this way" as I listen to the program in Japanese.
And what I've learned is that foreign languages are just amazing, with rules of their own, just like they have their own rules in each country and region. At least my head is still working and using it this way would also stop its aging. Let's roll!!

英語と日本語はネイティブスピーカーと言ってもいいほどマスターしたつもりだ。だからいつもさらに他のをマスターしたいという欲があった。フランセー（フランス語）では
近いところまで行った。少しだけこの言葉はしゃべれる。フランス語は第２外国語として（実際は第３外国語だが）６年間、中学と高校で学んだからだ。でも、 やっぱりフランス人のインタビューを聞き取るのは難しい。例えば前サッカー日本代表のフィリップ・トルシエ監督がしゃべってるときとか。人生で常に練習す る術が無い限り、外国語をマスターすることは不可能に近いだけにフランス語と戦い続けることはより賢明なことなのだろうか。
大学に行くときはそう思わずに、ドイツ語とロシア語を選んだ。（それは「変わったこと」だった。普通学生は２か国語の必修のうち、１つは英語を選ぶからだ）どちらの言語でも「格」 に戸惑った。言葉に男性格や女性格があるのはフランス語でもあることだから、あまりびっくりしなかった（ドイツ語に中性格はあるけど）。でも、主格、属格 （生格・所有格）、与格、対格は英語ネイティブにとっては新しく、憂鬱になる発見だった。（ロシア語ではさらに造格、前置格というのもある！）
ハングルはさらに「すてき」だった。この言語は少しでも理解しておきたい。日本社会にとって、韓国と北朝鮮との交流が必要となってきているからだ。中国語 はあと数年は待ってもらえると思うので、ハングルはとにかくこの瞬間に学んでおかないと。でも文字が頭痛の種だ。ロシア文字の方が簡単だったな！
面白いことにこれらの外国語を学ぶには有利なこともある。韓国朝鮮語（中国語）は日本語を通して学んだ方が良いし、ドイツ語（フランス語やスペイン語も） は英語を通して学んだ方が良いからだ。英語によるドイツ語のレッスンは見つけられないが、テレビ講座を見ながら、「これは英語ならこうやって教えるな」と 思いながら日本語で聞いている。
そして何を学んだかというと、外国語はほんとに素晴らしいものであるということだ。それぞれの法則があって。それぞれの国や地域で自分のルールがあるよう に。少なくとも俺の頭はまだ動いているようだし、これをやっていることでその老化も止められそうだ。さぁ、このまま行ってみよー！！

　caseは英語ではあまり問題にならない。
　というかフランス語を学ぶまで聞いたことがなかった。
　英語も高等な文法の授業を受けると、確かに
　subjective caseやobjective caseのことは学ぶが、
　他のラテン語系の言語のように言葉が変わることは
　ほとんどあり得ない。
　なんか、一番簡単な言語を学んでいたいのかなぁと
　思うようになった。
