The Japanese people used to worship stability as the people were happy enough to cherish their lives under a shogun after a fairly long civil war era. After the world war, our people once again pledged their allegiance to the conservative LDP believing they will secure a firm growth in our economy, which in return gave the politicians a chance to control the flow of concessions.
Just as the 20th century was about to finish, I thought we were heading to another age of rivalry between leaders, making way to eliminating cozy relationships between politics, trade, and bureaucracy. I think we're still in that course and yesterday's voters' choice was supposed to be the "reform" commanding LDP and not the old conservative LDP...
As they secured a stable majority with the Komeito Party of over two-thirds of the seats in the Lower House, they can now do anything, YES, ANYTHING!
A drastic raise of the consumption tax, adding a heavy burden on the working middle class with the pension system, a rightist constitutional amendment... ANYTHING!!
I don't blame anyone wanting stability... the problem is which way the stabilization will head...

何紙かは勿論、「私たちの民主主義」に懐疑的だ…
昔、日本人は安定を敬愛した。かなり長い戦国時代のあと、将軍の下で生活を守ることに十分喜びを感じていた。世界大戦のあと、私たちは今度は保守・自民党に忠誠を誓った。確かな経済成長を確保してもらえると信じて。その代償に政治家に利権を握るチャンスを与えて。
２０世紀が終わる頃には、また指導者たちの間で争う時代に向かっていると思っていた。政財官の間にあるなれあいの関係を排除する道筋をつけて。まだその方 向に向かっていると思っている。何せ昨日の有権者の選択したのは、「改革」を進める自民党であって、古い保守的な自民党ではないはずだから…。
公明党とともに衆院の３分の２以上となる絶対安定多数を確保した以上、何でもできるようになった。そう、何でも！
消費税の大幅な増税、年金で働く中産階級に重い負担を加えて、右翼的憲法改正…何でも！！
安定を望む人を咎めるつまりはない…問題はその安定がどっちの方向に行くかなんだ…。

いつも３時間目に国旗に
忠誠を誓うための時間があった。

国家に忠誠を誓う方法は色々ある。
いつも誓うふりをしていた。
日本に忠誠を誓っていたつもりだから…。
でも、その忠誠を誓ったつもりの
日本は…。どこへ向かうのだろうか…。

On Monday, after getting to bed at around 5 in the morning, I forgot to set the alarm and woke up at around 11:30 hearing my mobile phone ring as an e-mail came in. Got to my office at around lunchtime, but I was still too sleepy to work.
We had a closing drinking party for the election coverage at night, but as the party was coming to an end at around ten, I was half asleep, and I went straight to my home. Fell practically dead in my bed... Yes, I was tired after all...
We're not going to have a national election for a long time, good thing when I think about the work that must be done, but maybe not a good thing for our democracy...

月曜日は朝の５時に床についたが、アラームをセットするのを忘れて、電子メールが入ったために携帯が鳴った１１時半頃に起床。昼食時に職場に出たが、仕事 するには眠すぎだった。夜には選挙報道の打ち上げ飲み会があったが、飲み会が終わる１０時ごろには、半分居眠りしていて、すぐに帰宅した。ほとんど死んだ 状態で寝た…。やっぱしかなり疲れてたんだ…。
もう長い間国政選挙があることはない。やらないといけない仕事のことを考えると良いことなんだけど、民主主義にとっては良くないことかも…。
