the morning news shows were all reporting about the disappointing story...
Bad news came in when I was getting into bed just before 3AM, as NASA had decided to delay the Space Shuttle Discovery's launch.
Along with many of us, media gathered to see the would-be epoch making step by the United States towards the space age has been taken to another disheartening recess. Well at least it doesn't look like a hopeless one and the launch may be set again for Saturday.
...But to be sure the trip won't become a fatal one, the space engineers could well determine they should check everything again, and that would cost another two months.
For us in Japan, the Shuttle isn't just an American flight trying to return back to its track in the space race, as a Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency(JAXA) is on board the spaceship and he carries many dreams of kids fantasizing of following his path.
I hope there can be a quick recovery that also will assure their absolute safety!
...And about space. Well, I know I can't be a pilot of a spaceship, but how about taking my wife and children (of course if I have any...) on a space voyage just about the time I retire, because I'm sure it'll be a cheap trip at that time, right!?

午前３時前にまさしくベッドに入ろうとしていたころに悪いニュースが入ってきた。ＮＡＳＡがスペースシャトル・ディスカバリーの打ち上げの延期を決めたとのことだ。
ア メリカが宇宙時代に向かう画期的なステップを踏むはずだったところを一目見ようと、たくさんのスタッフがいる我々のところも含めて、駆けつけたメディア は、また落胆させられる足踏みを見せられた。まぁとりあえずどうしようもないものじゃなさそうだし、打ち上げはまた土曜日に行われるかも知れないらしい。
…旅が致命的なものにならないと確信が持てるように、宇宙工学の技術屋さんたちはもう一回すべてを見直す必要があると判断する可能性も高いし、そうだとさらに２ヶ月が必要となるだろう。
日本にいる我々にとって、シャトルは単にアメリカが宇宙開発競争の軌道に戻るための旅ではない。宇宙航空研究開発機構（ＪＡＸＡ）の日本人宇宙飛行士、野口聡一さんが宇宙船の中に乗り込んでいて、同じような道を歩みたいという子供たちのたくさんの夢を積んでいる。
早い復旧を祈っているが、確かな安全を保証するものであって欲しい！
…そして宇宙について。まぁ、もう宇宙船のパイロットにはなれないことは分かってるので、ちょうど定年退職する頃に妻と子どもを（勿論、いたらだけど…）宇宙旅行に連れて行くってのはどうかな。だってそのころにはきっと安い旅なんでしょ！？

みんな思ってた。チャレンジャーが爆発しても
まだひょっとしたらそうなると思ってた。
でも、気づいたら…。還暦を迎える頃に行けるだろうか。
年齢制限ってのがありませんように！！
