Will it change for the better?

For the evening news, I called several travel agencies on the phone to check how the tours to China are doing after there were a series of brutal anti-Japanese demonstrations last weekend. Many are starting to cancel their visit, and the travel agencies are just praying it will all quiet down...
Forgetting about the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989, China was one of the countries I've wanted to visit as it's becoming more attractive even without their hosting of the Olympic games in 2008.
But my views have changed a little and I bet it's the same with many other Japanese. Shouldn't be too emotional, but who would want to go to a country where the citizens demonstrate because of hatred towards us...
China will no doubt be one of the champions of this world in a decade or two and there's no way we'll be able to be prosperous without being friends with them. But as long as the WW2 tragedy haunts the older generations, the younger ones like us will have to work harder to go on.
Well for me at least, taking a tour to China will all depend on whether the Shino-Japanese relationship will change for the better and I haven't the slightest idea what we can do...

夜のニュースのためにいくつかの旅行代理店に電話して、中国ツアーの状況を確認した。先週末に反日デモが相次いだためだ。多くがキャンセルし始めていて、旅行代理店も事態が落ち着くことを祈るしかないようだ…。
1989年の天安門事件のこともすっかり忘れて、中国は一回は訪ねてみたい国だった。2008年のオリンピック開催が無くてもどんどん魅力的になっている国だ。
でも少し考えが変わった。他の日本人もきっとそうだろう。あまり感情的になっちゃいけないけど、日本人が嫌いだからデモをする人たちがいる国に行きたいと思うかねぇ…。
中国はおそらく十年後、二十年後に世界の覇者となるだろう。中国と友好的でない限り繁栄はないだろう。しかし、第二次世界大戦の悲劇が上の世代をつきまとう以上は、我々の世代はもっと頑張らねばならないだろう。
まぁしかし個人的には中国へ旅行に行くかどうかは中日関係が改善するかどうか次第だ。そのために何が出来るのか何の知恵もないけど…。みんなはどう思うかな？アジアの仲間たちとして。

　　使えるが、of courseやその後に使っているno way we'll be able to...と
　　違って、でも少しはdoubtがあるよってな意味も含まれている。
　　訳は「おそらく」としておく。

　　中国の地名（や人名なども）って英語に訳すのって難しいんだよね。
　　天安門広場は事件が起きた高校の時によくアメリカで聞いてたから
　　分かるけど…。ちなみに発音はティアナメン・スクウェアー。
　　ついでに毛沢東はMao Zedong（マオ・ゼドン）。
