Looking for the truth

A city filled with fond memories, and here I am for work!

Yesterday, I went to Kyoto, my hometown when I was a college boy, to interview an expert on railroad engineering. At this point there were too less information to tell what had happened completely, but there were some hints.
Though speed was undoubtedly the main question, according to the expert, there could have been other causes that could have led to the accident. As the speed was certainly exceeding the limit, there must have been a trigger that blew the train off the tracks. What this may be might take days, weeks, months to ascertain... The Hyogo Prefectural Police and the Transport Ministry Accident Investigation Committee is taking this laborious task to unfold the truth.
There were reports on Thursday that the driver of the derailed train was found dead, and with others taking the death toll to 106. Without the motorman's life, we will never be able to know what he was thinking at the last moment...

After it has become clear that the conductor was lying about the overrun error at the last station the train had stopped before the accident, it was obvious there was something wrong about JR West's innate characteristics itself. But it is also true that trains are run by human beings daily even after the tradegy. There is always human errors in what we all do, and we must find the bottom line of which range we can allow as errors.
Drawing a lesson from this accident will be the best way to mourn the dead, how long it may take...

昨日、京都へ行った。大学時代のホームタウンだ。鉄道工学の専門家に話を聞くためだ。この時点では何が起きたのかを完全に理解するためには情報が少なすぎたが、幾つかのヒントは見つけた。
スピードが文句なしに最大の問題だが、専門家によると、事故につながる原因は他にも考えられるようだ。速度超過は間違いなくあったが、電車を吹き飛ばすた めの何らかのトリガーがあったはずだ。これが何なのか確認するためには何日も、何週間も、何ヶ月もかかるかも知れない。兵庫県警や国土交通省事故調査委員 会が真実を暴くためにこの骨が折れる仕事を担っている。
木曜日には、脱線した電車の運転士の遺体が見つかった。それ以外の遺体も合わせて死者の数は１０６になった。運転士の命が失われた以上、彼が最後の瞬間に何を考えたのかは永久に分からなくなった。
車掌が事故直前に止まった駅でのオーバーランのミスについて嘘をついていたことが分かってから、ＪＲ西日本自身の体質に何か問題があることは明白だ。でもこの悲しい出来事のあとも毎日、人間が電車を動かしていることも動かしがたい真実だ。何をするにしてもヒューマンエラーはある。だからエラーとして許容できる最低限の範囲を見極めなければならない。
この事故から教訓を導き出すことが、死者への最大の供養となる。どれだけ時間がかかっても…。

　この会社を呪っているのだろうか。その頃のことなんて
　死んだ運転士は全く知らないだろうに…。
