I remember at junior high, as I went through the World History textbook, the section about WWII had the Japanese commander as "Emperor Hirohito" 「天皇裕仁」 and not the "Showa Emperor (Tenno)" 「昭和天皇」 as we naturally say in Japan. We barely call His Majesty with his first name. The Royal Family's member born as a male has always had "-hito" 「- 仁」 meaning "charity" and "benevolence" in his name.
Today, millions were awaiting what the newborn His Highness' name will be.

中学の時に、世界史の教科書を読み通したときのことを覚えてるよ。第２次世界大戦のセクションで、日本の総帥は「エンペラーヒロヒト」と書かれていて、日本でよく言う「ショーワエンペラー」ではなかったことを。陛下の名前を下の名前で読むことはあんまりない。男子として生まれた皇族は常に「寛容」や「慈愛」という意味の「－ヒト」という字が名前に入っていた。
きょうは何万人もの人たちが生まれたばかりの殿下の名前が何になるのか待ちわびていた。
