Day of Surprises!?

タイトル:サプライズの日!?

Most of the media... NO... ALL of the media were predicting there will be no surprises.
But when Zico announced the last player going to Germany, a shout came out from every part of this nation. Maki... wow... without Kubo... wow...
Surprises are just great treats for the media... that's what we make our livings on!!

But maybe it wasn't a surprise at all for the great Brazilian forward Zico.
I think it's a well balanced team and Zico's plan is now evident...
to attack when necessary after controlling the ball at the center.

C'mon Nippon!
Now it's you guys who're going to surprise everybody!!

◆Soccer: Profiles of Japan's World Cup squad members
TOKYO, May 15 KYODO
Following are brief profiles of the 23 members of Japan's World Cup squad announced Monday by the Japan Football Association:

Goalkeepers:
Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi (Jubilo Iwata) age 30, caps 87.
Excellent shot-stopper played a pivotal role in helping Japan retain the Asian Cup in 2004. The France 1998 keeper returned to the J-League last year to join Jubilo Iwata after disappointing spells with Portsmouth in England and Denmark's FC Nordsjaelland.

Seigo Narazaki (Nagoya Grampus Eight) age 30, caps 50
Dislodged Kawaguchi on the eve of the 2002 World Cup and played in all four games for the co-hosts. Has been used sparingly by Zico since Kawaguchi reclaimed No. 1 spot in 2004.

Yoichi Doi (FC Tokyo) age 32, caps 4
The oldest player in the squad made his national team debut against Malaysia in 2004 and is a reliable substitute for Japan when called into action.
-----
Defenders:
Tsuneyasu Miyamoto (Gamba Osaka) age 29, caps 67
A natural leader, Japan's 2002 World Cup captain has been an ever-present under Zico but his weaknesses tend to be exploited when Japan play four at the back.

Alessandro Santos (Urawa Reds) age 28, caps 70
Brazilian-born winger, who took Japanese citizenship in 2001, has been in top form this season. Quick, an excellent crosser of the ball and dangerous from set pieces.

Yuji Nakazawa (Yokohama F Marinos) age 28, caps 48
The 2004 J-League Player of the Year hardly put a foot out of place throughout Japan's qualifying campaign. Excellent in the air and pops up with important goals but has suffered an alarming dip in form this year.

Koji Nakata (Basel, Switzerland) age 26, caps 54
The less famous of the two Nakatas in the squad, the versatile former Marseille man will be playing in his second World Cup. Equally comfortable in defense or midfield.

Keisuke Tsuboi (Urawa Reds), age 26, 31 caps.
A quick defender who appears to have recaptured the kind of form that made him a Zico favorite before he was forced out of action for a large chunk of 2004 with a hamstring injury.

Akira Kaji (Gamba Osaka), age 26, 42 caps.
Speedy right-winger has been consistently solid since making his international debut in 2003.

Yuichi Komano (Sanfrecce Hiroshima) age 24, caps 6
Athens Olympian is an accurate crosser of the ball and has a high work rate. Can operate on the left or right side of defense.

Makoto Tanaka (Jubilo Iwata) age 30, caps 32
Reliable Atlanta Olympic defender can play in any position at the back.
-----
Midfielders:
Takashi Fukunishi (Jubilo Iwata) age 29, 60 caps.
Not one to shirk out of a tackle, the combative midfielder is good in the air and likes to get forward. Also a member of the 2002 World Cup squad.

Hidetoshi Nakata (Bolton Wanderers, England), age 29, 72 caps.
Japan's best known player has several seasons of experience in Europe. A strong leader and superb all-round player. Playing in what will be his third and possibly last World Cup, Japan would suffer without him.

Shunsuke Nakamura (Celtic, Scotland) age 27, 58 caps
World Cup debutant played a pivotal role in helping Celtic win the league and league cup in Scotland in his first season with the Hoops. Deadly from set pieces.

Mitsuo Ogasawara (Kashima Antlers) age 27, caps 50
Free-kick specialist and an outstanding passer of the ball. Had a trial in England with West Ham United at the start of the year and has been linked with moves to various Italian clubs.

Shinji Ono (Urawa Reds) age 26, 53 caps
Injury-prone former UEFA Cup winner recently returned to Japan this season after four and a half years in the Netherlands with Feyenoord. Like Nakata, a versatile and indispensable member of the team.

Junichi Inamoto (West Bromwich Albion, England) age 26, caps 62
Japan's 2002 World Cup hero with goals against Belgium and Russia, but the former Arsenal and Fulham man faces a battle with Fukunishi for the holding role in Germany.

Yasuhito Endo (Gamba Osaka) age 26, caps 40
One of the ''golden generation'' that finished runners-up at the 1999 World Youth Championship. No shortage of skill and always hungry for the ball. A solid defensive midfielder.
-----
Forwards:
Atsushi Yanagisawa (Kashima Antlers) age 28, caps 55
Former Sampdoria striker returned to Kashima Antlers on loan after an unhappy spell with Messina but is still recovering from a broken metatarsal sustained in a J-League match at the end of March.

Naohiro Takahara (Hamburg SV, Germany) age 26, caps 40
Missed out on the last World Cup after being struck down with a lung problem. Has spent most of his time at Hamburg on the bench, scoring just once this season.

Masashi Oguro (Grenoble, France) age 26, caps 16
Not afraid to shoot on sight and earned the ''supersub'' tag after coming off the bench to score crucial goals in the World Cup qualifying campaign.

Keiji Tamada (Nagoya Grampus Eight) age 26, caps 37
Fleet-footed striker was thrust into the limelight with goals at the Asian Cup two years ago. The pint-sized striker's lightning pace and movement could cause problems in Germany.

Seiichiro Maki (JEF United Chiba) age 25, caps 9
Fearless striker holds the ball up well, is good in the air and works tirelessly for the team. Was a surprise inclusion in the squad but has the potential to make a big impact.
