Second day...

タイトル：２日目…

And another quake at Niigata!
Jumped into my car and went to my office.
Is there an end to this!?

M5.0 quake hitting Niigata at 11:29AM, a maximum 5 plus on the Japanese trembling scale...

And I found out a much more distressing fact... Typhoons heading north!
Who knows if these things will hit Hokkaido! I hope not...

I couldn't resist the drowsiness, and took a nap again in the evening...
It was supposed to be vacation time, and I went to my office two days in a row!!
What a start...

At night I started to watch the recording of the animation films from where I left off on Friday night. Just like Star Wars is for Americans, "Gundam" films and TV animation serials had full support among the Japanese especially to kids and later on adults of my age. The younger generations were taken away by "Neon Genesis Evangelion" which started when I was already out of college.
"Mobile Suit Gundam" was not a super robot story which kids' hearts were taken away for several decades, but "real robot" stories where the robots (called mobile suits) could not finish off the "bad guys" on its own like the super robots.
With drama among the characters and the theme of telling how war is pitiful and miserable, watching these masterpieces after getting older made deeper impressions, realizing how well the plots are written.
For the Japanese my age, animation is a culture we all have tasted. But I think this SF animation film was a turning point, letting adults enjoy the cultural revolution.

そして新潟でまた地震が！
車に飛び乗って職場へ行った。
終わりがあるんかいな、これって！？

睡魔に勝てず、夕方にまた眠り込んでしまった…。
バケーションタイムやったはずやのに、２日連続で職場に行ってしもうたやんけ！！

ええ感じの始まりや…。

夜になって、金曜夜からの続きで、録画しておいたアニメ映画を見始めた。アメリカ人にとってスターウォーズがそうであるように、「ガンダム」の映画とテレ ビアニメシリーズは日本人の間で絶大な支持を得ていた。特に子供に、そしてその後、大人になった俺と同じ年代に。もっと若い世代は俺がすでに大学を卒業し たあとに始まった「新世紀エヴァンゲリオン」に持って行かれた。
「機動戦士ガンダム」は何十年も子供たちの心を奪い続けたスーパーロボット話ではなく、「リアルロボット」話だ。スーパーロボットのように（モビルスーツと呼ばれる）ロボットが自分だけで「悪い奴ら」の息の根を止めることはできない。
登場人物たちの間のドラマと、戦争がいかに辛く惨めなものかを伝えるテーマがあることで、年を重ねた後もこれらの名作を見て、さらに深い感動を覚える。筋書きがいかに良く書かれているか実感する。
俺の年代の日本人にとって、アニメは誰もが味わったことのある文化だ。でもこのＳＦアニメ映画が大人たちも文化的な革命を楽しめるようにした転換期だったと思う。

　冷戦時代に作られた作品だけに重い…。
