News about a landslide involving three people on Mount Shirouma of Nagano Prefecture forced me to get to my office one or two breaths earlier this morning. I still have no idea what the real cause of the disaster was, but it seems like heavy rain hadn't been the issue.
It was quite peaceful today and I had enough time to do some research about the Great Kanto Earthquake which was our nation's worst earthquake disaster of the 20th Century.
September 1st is the day this prewar disaster killed more than hundred thousand people 82 years ago around the old Tokyo City and Yokohama area. This day has been set as the Disaster Prevention Day from 1960 and in this period many of us including the media conduct emergency drills. (reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Kanto_earthquake honestly, when I was living in Kansai, I didn't know it was the memorial day for this destructive quake... a shame...)
This year it will be right in the middle of the election campaigning period. But I hope more people will think of the needs for more serious anti-disaster measures which I believe is more important than privatizing the national postal service!
I'll try my best this will be achieved, trying to convert the unconcerned through my job as a reporter, even if it'll be one person that would understand my concern!!
wandering around the Akasaka area... a little cloudy, but pleasant day!
けさは、長野県の白馬岳で３人が土砂崩落に巻き込まれたニュースが入ってきて、職場にひと呼吸かふた呼吸早く出ざるを得なかった。結局、実際の原因がなんだったのかいまだにさっぱり分からないが、とりあえず豪雨ではないようだ。
きょうはかなり平和で、関東大震災についてのリサーチをやる時間があった。我が国で、２０世紀中、最も被害が大きかった地震災害だ。
９月１日は８２年前、この戦前の災害で旧東京市や横浜市で１０万人以上が殺された日だ。この日は１９６０年に防災の日と設定され、メディアも含めて多くの 人たちが緊急訓練などを行う。（英語の参考ＵＲＬ。正直言うと、関西で生活しているときに、この恐ろしい地震の記念日だとは知らなかったっす…恥ずかし い…）
今年はちょうど選挙期間中になってしまう。でももっとたくさんの人がより真剣な災害対策が必要だと思ってくれたらいいなと思う。これは国の郵政事業を民営化するより大切だと信じているんだけど！
こうなるように最善の努力を尽くしたい。記者の仕事を通じて、無関心な人たちを改心させられるように。たとえその心配事を理解してくれるのが１人だけだとしても！！

単純なことだけど、難しいことだぁ。
