M7.2 earthquake off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture at 11:46AM

Six minus on the Japanese trembling scale was observed again, as an earthquake again rocked our nation just before noon.
The Tohoku area of Japan has been haunted by quakes as Miyagi have experienced quakes with a stronger shake than 6 minus on the trembling scale twice in 2003. Today's quake could have been "The Coast of Miyagi Prefecture Earthquake" the government have been announcing its imminence, as the calculation was that a quake of around M7.5 would hit the area by a high percentage of around 90% in this coming 20 years, and 99% in this coming 30 years.
I doubt that everybody was prepared for the quake, but there were no reports of deaths today, only a mysterious crumbling of ceilings in a newly built indoor pool facility in Sendai City which was hit with a shake of five plus on the trembling scale.
With a tsunami advisory announced after the quake, I went into the news studio right after the quake to give commnentaries about the disaster. To be honest, I hate to speak on TV, as I even tell my boss not to make me get in front of the TV camera at ordinary times, BUT it's a whole different story when it's about life and death, and there's things I must do to fulfill my obligations, even though they may be something I don't like, having some expert knowledge I've accumulated over the years.
Taking responsibilities especially on emergencies to tell our audiences what is important and facilitate the hard-to-understand jargon by scientists and agencies is my raison d'être.
Finishing off by commenting on the late night news about the quake, I think I've done a satisfactory job today.

正午の直前、地震がわが国をまた揺らして、再び震度６弱が観測された。
日本の東北地方は地震に取り憑かれているのか。宮城では震度６弱以上の揺れになる地震が２００３年に２回も起きているんだから。きょうの地震は政府がその切迫性を発表していた「宮城県沖地震」なのかも知れない。予測ではマグニチュード７．５前後の地震がこの地域を襲うのは、この２０年以内で９０％程度、この３０年以内で９９％という高い確率だった。
みんな地震に備えていたと信じがたいが、きょうは、死者の情報は入ってこなかった。震度５強の揺れに襲われた仙台市で、新しく建てられた室内プールの施設の天井がなぞの崩壊をしたことぐらいだ。
地震後、津波注意報が発表されたこともあって、地震の直後にニューススタジオに入って災害についての解説をした。正直言うと、テレビでしゃべるのは嫌い だ。上司にも通常時はテレビカメラの前に立たせないようにお願いしているぐらいだ。でも、生死に関わることなら、全く違う話だ。例えそれが嫌いなことで あっても、この数年で蓄積してきた専門知識が相当あるだけに、果たさないといけない義務もあるんだ。
責任を取ること、特に緊急時に視聴者に何が重要で、科学者や政府機関の理解不能な専門用語を分かりやすく伝えることが自分の存在理由だ。
地震について夜遅くのニュースで解説して一日を終えたが、きょうは及第点の仕事はできたと思う。
