Fourteen years ago, when I was still in my first year in college, reporters were killed by deadly clouds generated by the heat of a hot pyroclastic flow from the Unzen Volcano in Nagasaki.
Years after that regretful disaster, the equipments including television cameras were found today in Shimabara City.
How painful it is to see the muddy cameras... The deadly incident happened when the media went a step too far to get better pictures. Even famous foreign volcanologists were with the group and they were killed altogether in the ambitious adventure. Well maybe it even wasn't an adventure for them, as letting other media get better pictures were out of the question...

But it ain't that easy, you know...
Last October, when I went to the disaster stricken area of Niigata Chuetsu Earthquake the next day the quake hit, there were still many dangerous cliffs and roads that may collapse with an aftershock. Together with scientists, I had to decide which way to go and where to take pictures with a younger cameraman and assistant as my crew. I did try to consult my bosses in Tokyo what safety measures I should take, but there were times where we had to take decisions on our own, especially where the mobile phones and walkie-talkies weren't working... Boy, am I glad I'm still alive! I think many reporters and media staff were in danger if a strong aftershock had hit the area. I sweared that night, I'll never take chances just to get better pictures...
Looking at the picture of equipments all mud-caked, I once again give my word that safety will always be number one and remember I won't be scared to be called a coward when it's all right to be one!!

１４年前、まだ大学の１年目だったときに、長崎にある雲仙火山から発生した火砕流の熱でできた雲に飲み込まれ、報道陣が殺された。
この悔やまれる災害から何年も経って、テレビカメラなどの機材がきょう島原市で見つかったのだ。
泥 だらけのカメラを見るのが、いかに痛々しいことか…。この致命的な事件は、メディアがもっと良い絵を撮ろうとして、一線を越えたときに起きた。グループ の中には有名な外国人の火山学者がいたくらいで、みんな一緒に野心的な冒険の犠牲となった。ひょっとしたら彼らにとっては冒険でさえ無かったのかも知れな い。他のメディアにもっと良い絵を撮られるのは論外なのだから…。

でもそんなに簡単じゃないんだよ、分かるかな…。
去 年の１０月、新潟中越地震が起きた次の日に被災地に入ったとき、余震で壊れそうな危ない崖や道がまだたくさんあった。科学者と一緒に、若いカメラマンと 助手とクルーを組んでいたが、どの道を走って、どこで絵を撮るのか自分で判断しなければならなかった。安全対策については、上司に相談をするようにした が、携帯電話や無線機がつながらないときには自分たちで判断をしなければならないことが度々あった…。いやぁ、まだ生きてて良かった！強い余震が被災地を 襲ったなら、たくさんの記者とスタッフが危険にさらされていたと思う。その夜、もっと良い絵を撮るためだけに運に頼るのは止めようと誓った…。
泥まみれになった機材の写真を見て、今一度安全こそが一番で有り続けるべきだと誓った。そして臆病者になっても良いときはそう言うのを恐れないことも忘れないぞ！！
