WCDR

The United Nations World Conference on Disaster Reduction (WCDR) started this day in Kobe. It was merely a ceremonial event, just one of many events in the memory of the Great Earthquake, till a destructive earthquake and tsunami had destroyed coastal areas of the Indian Ocean in the end of 2004.
Now WCDR was in the middle of a fight towards setting an example for the coming years on how countries of different interests can team up and help the suffering. Not just for emergency measures, but for a longer recovering process and most of all, the creation of a tsunami early warning system (EWS) for the Indian Ocean region.
Let us see how the 150 and more countries pursue their goals for a better and safer world.

国連防災世界会議がこの日、神戸で始まった。大震災を記念した様々なイベントの一つとして、儀式的なものにすぎなかったが、2000年末にインド洋沿岸地域を壊滅させた破滅的な地震と津波がそれを一変させた。
防災世界会議はまさしく、将来に向けて異なる興味を持つ国々がいかに力を合わせて被災者を救っていくのか、その模範を示すための戦いのまっただ中にある。緊急対策だけでなく、長期的な復旧過程、そして何より、インド洋地域のための津波早期警戒システムの創設のために。
さて、150以上の国々がより良い安全な世界をどのように追求していくのか見ていこう。

　　そういう人たちの取材するのはいつも悲しいし、辛い。
　　でも、誰かがやらないといけない…。
